{"id":224204,"date":"2016-06-21T13:08:52","date_gmt":"2016-06-21T13:08:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=224204"},"modified":"2016-06-21T13:08:52","modified_gmt":"2016-06-21T13:08:52","slug":"teshie-nungua-la-residents-protest-killer-ecg-tariffs-photos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=224204","title":{"rendered":"Teshie-Nungua, La residents protest &#8216;killer&#8217; ECG tariffs [Photos]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Outraged residents of Nungua, Teshie and Labadi, took to the the streets of Accra in their numbers, to show their displeasure with what they call the &#8216;killer tariffs&#8217; by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-224209\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/ab55ee99-113e-4735-aade-f45d0ff7843c.jpg\" alt=\"ab55ee99-113e-4735-aade-f45d0ff7843c\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Wielding placards with various inscriptions depicting their anger at the government, the demonstrators called on government to reduce the suffocating tariffs, or face many more of such actions from them.<\/p>\n<p>Clad in red and black apparel,\u00a0the angry residents demonstrated\u00a0through major streets of the three communities.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-224208\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/8c89484c-0442-4f69-a9e2-ff9246d9c70d.jpg\" alt=\"8c89484c-0442-4f69-a9e2-ff9246d9c70d\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They are demanding immediate reduction in the cost of power, arguing that the high bills are collapsing their businesses and making their lives unbearable.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-224206\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/aae0b9ef-373a-4763-9cd1-9781d3d8a1a0.jpg\" alt=\"aae0b9ef-373a-4763-9cd1-9781d3d8a1a0\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Citi News&#8217;<\/strong> Philip Nii Lartey, who was amidst the demonstrators, said the demonstrators called on President Mahama to directly intervene in the tariff situation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-224205\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/a9fc7889-ff6c-44f4-b769-f243f19fc899.jpg\" alt=\"a9fc7889-ff6c-44f4-b769-f243f19fc899\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the protesters directed his appeal to the Electricity Company of Ghana, and the Municipal Chief Executive for the area.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-224210\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/113c1d99-fe09-4732-9ad3-56484572ac52.jpg\" alt=\"ecg demo, teshie\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another resident also expressed displeasure with the positioning of ECG meters outside their homes, and demanded the meters be moved back into their residences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are also pleading to ECG to take the meters from the poles and send it to our various homes. This is what we are asking the government to do for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Suspend \u2018problematic\u2019 billing software \u2013 PURC to ECG\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), in May 2016, instructed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), to <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/05\/24\/suspend-problematic-billing-software-purc-to-ecg\/\">suspend<\/a><\/strong><\/span> the implementation of their new billing software until further notice.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0statement signed by the PURC\u2019s Public Relations Director, Nana Yaa Jantuah, said the directive was necessitated by\u00a0incessant complaints from\u00a0customers who alleged that they were being over-billed by\u00a0the ECG.<\/p>\n<p>But staff of ECG have accused government of being responsible for the high tariffs following the increases and the introduction of taxes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Electricity tariffs up by 59.2%, water 67.2% ahead of Christmas<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The PURC late last year sanctioned an increase of<span style=\"color: #666699;\"> <a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/12\/07\/electricity-tariffs-up-by-59-2-water-67-2-ahead-of-christmas\/\"><strong>59.2 percent and 67.2 percent<\/strong> <\/a><\/span>for electricity and water tariffs respectively.
