{"id":219156,"date":"2016-06-02T12:25:19","date_gmt":"2016-06-02T12:25:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=219156"},"modified":"2016-06-02T12:25:19","modified_gmt":"2016-06-02T12:25:19","slug":"komenda-sugar-factory-likely-to-fail-minority-mps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=219156","title":{"rendered":"Komenda Sugar factory likely to fail &#8211; Minority MPs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Minority New Patriotic Party (NPP) members in Parliament, are expressing fears that the recently commissioned Komenda Sugar Factory may become a white elephant soon.<\/p>\n<p>According to them, even though the factory has the potential to alleviate poverty through job creation and also cut the country&#8217;s sugar exports, government and its partners failed to consider certain fundamental problems associated with the running of the factory before the commissioning.<\/p>\n<p>They say factors such as the unavailability of sugarcane to feed the factory, unattractive prices for\u00a0sugarcane produced by farmers and the high cost of irregular electrical power, may soon cripple the factory.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;oFq49Ou0a7dn29860MujBT85RwjpdEXW&#8221;]Addressing a press conference in Parliament today [Thursday], Ranking Member for Trade and Industry and MP for Wenchi, Professor George Gyan Baffour, said the government&#8217;s penchant for political expediency did not allow for critical analysis to be done on the whole project before roll out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs at the time of the commissioning of the factory, the factory was and is still far from ready to start production since the outgrower farms are not ready. Running a sugar plant is like running an oil refinery or aluminium manufacturing industry.
