{"id":219017,"date":"2016-06-02T06:29:09","date_gmt":"2016-06-02T06:29:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=219017"},"modified":"2016-06-02T06:29:09","modified_gmt":"2016-06-02T06:29:09","slug":"govt-has-no-intention-of-introducing-new-taxes-mahama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=219017","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Gov&#8217;t has no intention of introducing new taxes&#8217; &#8211; Mahama"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President John Dramani Mahama has discounted reports in some sections of the media that government intends to introduce new taxes soon.<\/p>\n<p>The President on his twitter handle on Thursday assured Ghanaians that his administration has no plans to undertake such a move.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Government has no intention of introducing new taxes.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 John Dramani Mahama (@JDMahama) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JDMahama\/status\/738085285041479680\">June 1, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>His disclaimer comes after the Finance Minister Seth Tekper, at a Graphic Business forum <a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/05\/31\/terkper-justifies-tax-on-pensions-and-allowances\/\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>argued for slapping<\/strong><\/span><\/a> of taxes on pension contributions within a certain period.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the first Graphic Business Breakfast Series for this year, Mr. Terkper insisted that allowances must be taxed to prevent people from evading taxes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes allowances must be taxed.\u00a0 Allowances are income. The issue I know is a very difficult one, it\u2019s about taxing income and if you do not define income broadly, you would have tax payers either through avoidance or hiding the income in areas which are not taxed. It\u2019s a thorny one.
