{"id":216218,"date":"2016-05-22T12:31:30","date_gmt":"2016-05-22T12:31:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=216218"},"modified":"2016-05-22T12:31:30","modified_gmt":"2016-05-22T12:31:30","slug":"nduom-urges-mahama-others-to-commit-to-compulsory-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=216218","title":{"rendered":"Nduom urges Mahama, others to commit to compulsory education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Founder of the Progressive People\u2019s Party (PPP), Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, has stated his support for the enforcement of the compulsory aspect of Ghana\u2019s education policy, because it is the key to ensuring that every Ghanaian child is enrolled in school.<\/p>\n<p>He has therefore challenged incumbent President John Dramani Mahama and the Flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo, to also make their position on the matter known.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI support compulsory education as a means to give opportunity for every Ghanaian child to reach their human potential and live a good quality of life. I will be happy if John Dramani Mahama and Nana Akufo-Addo and other presidential candidates will also support compulsory education,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;Y2i9nG2eFw2jX6SwgFPIPP08YQtt7426&#8243;]Despite the formulation of the Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) policy several\u00a0years ago to ensure that every child is given equal access to education, successive governments in the second Republic have failed to implement it.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Nduom and his PPP have been major campaigners for the implementation of the FCUBE for some time now.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, the party <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2015\/05\/14\/supreme-court-to-rule-on-ppps-fcube-case\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>filed a writ<\/strong><\/a><\/span> at the Supreme Court in a bid to compel government to enforce aspects of the policy, however, the <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2015\/05\/14\/supreme-court-throws-out-ppps-fcube-case\/\" target=\"_blank\">case was dismissed<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">B<\/span><\/span>ut the seven member panel of judges who sat on the case did not assign any reason for their decision.<\/p>\n<p>In his recent post on Facebook, Dr. Nduom argued that compulsory education is the key to empower the citizenry and not free education or expanding access to educational facilities.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that enforcing the policy is a sure way of making the &#8220;nation strong and its people prosperous.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTalking \u2018expanding access\u2019 or \u2018free SHS\u2019 won&#8217;t do. Our 1992 Constitution supports compulsory education and that is in good order. We must all support it and push for its full implementation so that every child can read, write, count and reason for themselves.
