{"id":214921,"date":"2016-05-17T13:32:09","date_gmt":"2016-05-17T13:32:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=214921"},"modified":"2016-05-17T13:32:09","modified_gmt":"2016-05-17T13:32:09","slug":"npp-lawyers-justify-afokos-suspension-in-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=214921","title":{"rendered":"NPP lawyers justify Afoko&#8217;s suspension in court"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lawyers for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), today [Tuesday] sought to justify the suspension of the party&#8217;s National Chairman, Paul Afoko in court, saying, Mr. Afoko deliberately frustrated the internal process to tackle petitions brought against him.<\/p>\n<p>The lawyers, who made this known during a cross examination of Mr. Afoko in the case, argued that the embattled Chairman deliberately submitted to the National Council a list of members for the\u00a0party&#8217;s\u00a0disciplinary committee, with only one woman despite the constitutional requirement of two women.<\/p>\n<p>Afoko is challenging his suspension in court.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;jJoginWfuFUlsxE6taeNV0I2qRtm7fL4&#8243;]But\u00a0Mr. Afoko denied the accusation in court, insisting that\u00a0the decision on the formation of the disciplinary committee was not solely taken by him but collectively with\u00a0the national council.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Afoko in 2015 filed the suit challenging his suspension as National Chairman of the NPP.<\/p>\n<p>In his suit, he argues that the action and processes leading to his suspension by some elements of the party were unconstitutional and a breach of natural justice.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Afoko also raised issues with the capacity of one member of the disciplinary committee Gifty Kusi, who was part of the decision to suspend him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Afoko sued NPP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The NPP\u2019s National Executive Committee suspended Paul Afoko in October 2015 for \u201cmisconduct.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The decision was adopted by the party\u2019s National Council, which is the second highest decision making body of the party after congress.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Afoko rejected the reasons for his suspension and subsequently sued the party for taking such an action against him.<\/p>\n<p>After Mr. Afoko&#8217;s suspension, the General Secretary of the party, Kwabena Agyepong, and a 2nd National Vice Chairman, Sammy Crabbe, who are his allies, <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/05\/10\/kwabena-agyepong-pops-up-in-court-to-support-afoko-crabbe\/\">were also suspended<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Fred Djabanor\/citifmonline,com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lawyers for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), today [Tuesday] sought to justify the suspension of the party&#8217;s National Chairman, Paul Afoko in court, saying, Mr. Afoko deliberately frustrated the internal process to tackle petitions brought against him.
