{"id":208453,"date":"2016-04-21T17:22:36","date_gmt":"2016-04-21T17:22:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=208453"},"modified":"2016-04-21T17:22:36","modified_gmt":"2016-04-21T17:22:36","slug":"govt-distributes-outboard-motors-jamestown-fishermen-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=208453","title":{"rendered":"Gov&#8217;t distributes outboard motors to Jamestown fishermen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following\u00a0<strong>Citi News\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0reports on challenges confronting fishermen along the coast particularly in the Jamestown area in Accra, government has presented\u00a0eight outstanding outboard motors to some fishermen at Jamestown.<\/p>\n<p>The fishermen had bemoaned, among other things,<strong><span style=\"color: #666699;\">\u00a0<a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2016\/04\/13\/jamestown-fishermen-cry-to-govt-for-outboard-motors\/\">government\u2019s failure<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>to provide them with outboard motors after they made part payment in a subsidized government programme several months ago.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;6U8oI3FpQpsWPFzF81uo4qPtY2jvjyDc&#8221;]\u00a0The fishermen, who say they paid about GHc 6,000\u00a0for the outboard motors about five months ago, were yet to receive them.<\/p>\n<p>The fishermen\u00a0at the appeared cheerful after the Minister\u00a0of\u00a0Fisheries\u00a0and Aquaculture Development, Sherry\u00a0Ayittey visited the shore to\u00a0distribute\u00a0the eight outstanding outboard motors to add to\u00a0the 22 distributed last year.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Ms.\u00a0Ayittey, each outboard motor would have cost GHc12,000 but for government\u2019s intervention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur father President Mahama has subsidized the price. We term this as a presidential initiative. The outboard motors are very expensive. What we have brought today costs GHc12,000 cedis but the fisher folk paid GHc6000. The difference has been paid by government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The beneficiaries of the outboard motors expressed their joy to\u00a0<strong>Citi News<\/strong>, because, according them, work will now go on smoother than before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very happy. My canoe hasn\u2019t been in use for the past six months but hopefully Monday, serious business will commence. I have waited for this outboard motor for close to eight months now. I have a lot of problems here but I believe they will be solved one by one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Secretary for the Ga Mashie Canoe Fishermen Association, Alfred Lamptey, lauded the distribution of the eight outboard motors but also indicated that government could be doing more to bolster the fishing industry in Jamestown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday that the machines have arrived and have been given to the owners, I am happy. We need extra ones because we the canoe owners are more than 300&#8230; but what we have been supplied is only 30.
