{"id":208350,"date":"2016-04-21T11:56:37","date_gmt":"2016-04-21T11:56:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=208350"},"modified":"2016-04-21T11:56:37","modified_gmt":"2016-04-21T11:56:37","slug":"supreme-court-places-injunction-new-nmc-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=208350","title":{"rendered":"Supreme Court places injunction on new NMC law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Supreme Court has placed an injunction on the implementation of the new law requiring media owners to seek content approval from the National Media Commission (NMC) before publication.<\/p>\n<p>The Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), dissatisfied with the new regulations, <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2016\/01\/05\/giba-fights-nmcs-new-content-authorisation-law\/\">filed a suit<\/a><\/strong><\/span> at the Supreme Court to strike out the new law, arguing that some of the regulations are inconsistent with the 1992 Constitution which guarantees unfettered media freedom.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0National President of GIBA, Akwesi Agyeman, earlier said some aspects of the L.I somewhat reintroduces the repealed\u00a0Criminal Libel Law.<\/p>\n<p>The new L.I empowers the NMC\u00a0to grant content authorization to an electronic operator or revoke same if it goes contrary to the L.I.<\/p>\n<p>The Content Standards Regulation 2015 also entreats all radio and television stations \u00a0to seek content authorization from the NMC before airing a particular programme\u00a0or in default pay a fine or serve between two and five years in jail.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Magdalene Teiko Larnyoh\/citifmonline.com\/<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Supreme Court has placed an injunction on the implementation of the new law requiring media owners to seek content approval from the National Media Commission (NMC) before publication.
