{"id":206090,"date":"2016-04-12T12:30:28","date_gmt":"2016-04-12T12:30:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=206090"},"modified":"2016-04-12T12:30:28","modified_gmt":"2016-04-12T12:30:28","slug":"gender-ministrys-aid-for-mother-jailed-over-wee-drink-begins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=206090","title":{"rendered":"Gender Ministry&#8217;s aid for mother jailed over \u2018wee\u2019 drink begins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Ministry of Gender Children and Social Protection has initiated steps\u00a0to appeal the sentence of the the mother of nine jailed 11 years for selling alcohol mixed with Indian hemp to the public, by requesting the records of the case.<\/p>\n<p>Ama Forson was sentenced by an Accra Circuit Court after she was charged with unlawful possession of narcotic drugs\u00a0but\u00a0pleaded not guilty to the charge and denied having knowledge of the drugs.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister of Gender and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2016\/04\/05\/ministry-to-rescue-mother-jailed-11-yrs-over-wee-drink\/\">earlier\u00a0announced<\/a><\/strong><\/span> that her outfit would be liaising with the Attorney General\u2019s Department to assess the circumstances of the case and provide support including legal services.<\/p>\n<p>The records requested by the Gender Ministry are\u00a0expected to guide the ministry on its next line of action as it seeks to appeal the sentencing of the woman.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Facts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The court, Presided over by Mr. Aboagye Tandoh, in his ruling\u00a0said the convict, apart from having custody of the drugs, knew the drugs were Indian hemp.<\/p>\n<p>The facts of the case were that, on September 29, 2015, the New Weija Police arrested the convict in a swoop at Bortianor in the Ga Central Municipality.<\/p>\n<p>The police, during their search on her premises, retrieved quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp from her black ladies\u2019 handbag.<\/p>\n<p>The search also revealed a wine bottle containing dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp and liquid.<\/p>\n<p>The sentence has been widely criticized as highhanded for the offense in question particularly when the convict has nine children to be catered for.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Magdalene Teiko Larnyoh\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Ministry of Gender Children and Social Protection has initiated steps\u00a0to appeal the sentence of the the mother of nine jailed 11 years for selling alcohol mixed with Indian hemp to the public, by requesting the records of the case.
