{"id":205760,"date":"2016-04-11T06:00:17","date_gmt":"2016-04-11T06:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=205760"},"modified":"2016-04-11T06:00:17","modified_gmt":"2016-04-11T06:00:17","slug":"austria-plans-seize-house-hitler-born","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=205760","title":{"rendered":"Austria plans to seize house where Hitler was born"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"story-body\">\n<div class=\"story-body__inner\">\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">The Austrian government says it plans to seize the house where Adolf Hitler was born to stop it being a focal point for Nazi sympathisers.<\/p>\n<p>Officials say the decision was taken after several years of discussion about how to prevent neo-Nazi interest.<\/p>\n<p>Hitler was born in the house in the town of Braunau am Inn in April, 1889.<\/p>\n<p>The property has been leased from its owner by the government since 1972, and it was used for many years as a centre for people with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>But it fell empty in 2011 following a dispute between the government and the owner, Gerlinde Pommer, who refused to grant permission for renovation.<\/p>\n<p>The new plan would include an offer of compensation from the state to her, interior ministry spokesman Karl-Heinz Grundboeck told AFP news agency.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are currently examining the creation of a law, which would force a change of ownership and pass the property to the Republic of Austria.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have come to the conclusion over the past few years that expropriation is the only way to avoid the building being used for the purposes of Nazi [sympathisers].&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He did not say what the government might then do with the property.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/D241\/production\/_89152835_17fd6cb3-86d9-4270-bdee-ad77a1821148.jpg\" alt=\"Adolf Hitler's birth house in Braunau am Inn, Austria\" width=\"610\" height=\"405\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>Locals say the property still attracts some neo-Nazi sympathisers, despite the house being unmarked.<\/p>\n<p>The only link to its past is a stone outside inscribed with the words: &#8220;Never again Fascism. In memory of millions of dead.&#8221; Hitler&#8217;s name does not appear.<\/p>\n<p>Various proposals have been put forward about how to use the house, including turning it into flats, a centre for adult education, a museum or a centre designed to confront the Nazi past.<\/p>\n<p>There have also been calls for its demolition, with one Russian MP offering to buy the house and blow it up.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/media\/images\/79826000\/jpg\/_79826102_79825536.jpg\" alt=\"Memorial stone, Braunau\" width=\"567\" height=\"319\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>Adolf Hitler lived on Salzburger Vorstadt for only a few weeks, before his family moved to another address in Braunau.
