{"id":204088,"date":"2016-04-04T10:52:22","date_gmt":"2016-04-04T10:52:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=204088"},"modified":"2016-04-04T10:52:22","modified_gmt":"2016-04-04T10:52:22","slug":"kufuors-son-named-in-panama-papers-scandal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=204088","title":{"rendered":"Kufuor&#8217;s son named in Panama papers scandal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The eldest son of Ghana\u2019s former President John Agyekum Kufuor has been named in the Panama papers scandal.<\/p>\n<p>The Panama papers, which is said to be the biggest and latest leak, larger than the US diplomatic cables released by Wiki leaks in 2010, represents the latest disclosure of confidential documents regarding\u00a0offshore companies of politicians, their relatives and associates \u2014 more than 100 in all.<\/p>\n<p>The Ghanaian part of the document features, John Addo Kufuor, who is said to have controlled a bank account in Panama worth $75,000.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn early 2001, shortly after the start of his father\u2019s first presidential term, Kufuor appointed Mossack Fonseca to manage The Excel 2000 Trust. Later that year, it controlled a bank account in Panama worth $75,000,\u201d the papers said.<\/p>\n<p>The document further revealed that Addo Kufuor\u2019s mother &#8211; Theresa Kufuor, then-Ghana\u2019s first lady \u201cwas also a beneficiary of that account. \u201c<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-204096\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Panama.png\" alt=\"Panama\" width=\"563\" height=\"384\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to the document, in November 2010, an employee in Mossack Fonseca&#8217;s compliance office in the British Virgin Islands, suggested to colleagues that \u201cdue to the apparent prevalence of corruption surrounding Mr. Kufour we would not recommend us taking him on as a client or continuing business with him\u201d but Mossack Fonseca continued to do business with Kufuor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2012, Kufuor asked Mossack Fonseca to close the trust. Files also connected Kufuor with BVI companies Fordiant Ltd and Stamford International Investments Group Limited.
