{"id":201746,"date":"2016-03-26T14:00:45","date_gmt":"2016-03-26T14:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=201746"},"modified":"2016-03-26T14:00:45","modified_gmt":"2016-03-26T14:00:45","slug":"continuous-curfew-on-tafo-illegal-lawyer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=201746","title":{"rendered":"Continuous curfew on Tafo illegal &#8211; Lawyer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A private legal practitioner, Dennis Adjei Dumoh, has expressed concern about the continuous imposition of a curfew on the\u00a0\u00a0Tafo Township in the Ashanti Region, saying it\u00a0is against the country\u2019s laws.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Last month, the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) placed a curfew on the Tafo township following clashes between the Muslims and the locals backed by the traditional authorities over a piece of cemetery land.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;IPjbCFhXsgp1tI5jc7H8ALxibTlGtrVg&#8221;]One Muslim died and several others sustained injuries after violent clashes between the two.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The curfew\u00a0has since\u00a0been eased\u00a0but some political and traditional leaders have called on the Interior Ministry to lift the curfew entirely because total calm has returned to the town.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Curfew runs contrary to\u00a0Public Order Act<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking to <strong>Citi News<\/strong>, Dennis Adjei Dumoh said the handling of the curfew run contrary to the Public Order Act of Ghana and thus urged the Interior Minister to reconsider it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to Lawyer Dumoh, the law prescribes how the Interior Minister is supposed to impose a curfew.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He also noted that the length of the curfew which has exceeded 30 days, is illegal because a curfew cannot be imposed for more than seven days.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe law further goes ahead to say that no person can impose a curfew on the whole of Ghana and secondly if you impose a curfew, you cannot impose it for more than seven days at a go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Lawyer Dumoh also questioned why the curfew was imposed by REGSEC, something he explained is not in accordance with the law.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;The curfew was imposed by REGSEC.\u00a0The law on imposition does not give the power to impose a curfew by REGSEC.
