{"id":201734,"date":"2016-03-25T15:33:15","date_gmt":"2016-03-25T15:33:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=201734"},"modified":"2016-03-25T15:33:15","modified_gmt":"2016-03-25T15:33:15","slug":"jk-rowling-shares-rejection-letters-for-book-authored-under-pseudonym","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=201734","title":{"rendered":"JK Rowling shares rejection letters for book authored under pseudonym"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"story-body\">\n<div class=\"story-body__inner\">\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">JK Rowling has shared two rejection letters she received for her first novel writing as Robert Galbraith.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The author was trying to find a publisher for The Cuckoo&#8217;s Calling, which was eventually released in 2013.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rowling posted the rejections on Twitter, saying she was doing so to encourage other aspiring writers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of the letters, from publishing house Constable &amp; Robinson, says it &#8220;could not publish [The Cuckoo&#8217;s Calling] with commercial success&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The letter goes on to suggest politely that Galbraith &#8220;double check in a helpful bookshop&#8221; or in the twice yearly &#8220;buyer&#8217;s guide of Bookseller magazine&#8221;, about who the current publishers of his fiction genre are.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The letter adds &#8220;a writers&#8217; group or writing course may help&#8221; Galbraith to get constructive criticism of his debut crime novel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The second letter, from Creme de la Crime publishers, explains simply that they have become part of Severn House Publishers and are &#8220;unable to accept new submissions at the moment&#8221;.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-portrait no-caption full-width\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/4C62\/production\/_88945591_rowlingtweet.jpg\" alt=\"Robert Galbraith rejection letters\" width=\"601\" height=\"616\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><span class=\"story-image-copyright\">JK Rowling \/ Twitter<\/span><\/span><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rowling, who has more than seven million Twitter followers, posted them in response to a fan&#8217;s request for a picture of a rejection letter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She explained: &#8220;The Potter ones are now in a box in my attic, but I could show you Robert Galbraith&#8217;s?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Harry Potter author removed the signatures from the letters because she said she was posting them &#8220;for inspiration, not revenge&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;I wasn&#8217;t going to give up until every single publisher turned me down, but I often feared that would happen,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Author Joanne Harris joined the Twitter discussion, joking that she got so many rejections for her 1999 novel Chocolat that she had &#8220;made a sculpture&#8221; out of them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The novel went on to become hugely successful and was made into a film starring Juliette Binoche, Judi Dench and Johnny Depp.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Cuckoo&#8217;s Calling was eventually published by Sphere Books, an imprint of Little, Brown &amp; Company.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The book sold about 1,500 copies before Rowling&#8217;s identity as the author was revealed by the Sunday Times newspaper.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was Rowling&#8217;s second novel for adults, having released The Casual Vacancy under her real name in 2012.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Harry Potter series of books has to date sold more than 400 million copies.
