So many of us use WhatsApp daily but we don\u2019t understand the app completely \u2013 how it handles data, how we can be secure, how to\u00a0block spam and marketing contacts\u00a0and how to keep our conversations safe and backed up.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re a frequent WhatsApp user, these are the things you should know. Here are the top 10 WhatsApp tips you should know about.<\/p>\n

1. Last Seen, Privacy and Blocking<\/h2>\n

On Android go to\u00a0Settings<\/em>\u00a0->\u00a0Account<\/em>\u00a0->\u00a0Privacy<\/em>\u00a0to hide the coveted last seen timestamp, profile picture and status. You can also just leave it on for your contacts.<\/p>\n

On this page you\u2019ll also find an easy way to block people. Instead of going into their chat and digging through multiple menus each time, just tap\u00a0Blocked contacts<\/em>\u00a0button. Tap the\u00a0+<\/em>\u00a0button you\u2019ll see a list of all your contacts. Tap the ones you want to block.<\/p>\n

2. Disable Auto Download For Media<\/h2>\n

On Android go to\u00a0Settings<\/em>\u00a0->\u00a0Chat Settings<\/em>\u00a0->\u00a0Media auto-download<\/em>\u00a0and you\u2019ll find options that say \u2018When using mobile data\u2019, \u2018When connected on WiFi\u2019 and \u2018When roaming\u2019. Tap on each of them and uncheck all the options. Now, no media will be auto-downloaded.<\/p>\n

Settings<\/em>\u00a0->\u00a0Notifications<\/em>\u00a0allows you to manage sound and\u00a0notifications\u00a0for messages and groups. From here you can easily turn off sounds and notifications for groups if you\u2019re starting to get annoyed by them.<\/p>\n

4. Migrating To A New Number<\/h2>\n

From\u00a0Settings<\/em>\u00a0->\u00a0Account<\/em>\u00a0->\u00a0Change number<\/em>\u00a0you can migrate all your info, groups and settings to the new number. First confirm your old number, enter your new number and you\u2019re done.<\/p>\n

5. Back Up Messages<\/h2>\n

On Android you can back up your conversations (including media) to your local storage from\u00a0Chat Settings<\/em>. You can then email yourself a conversation as well.<\/p>\n

On the iPhone conversations can be\u00a0backed up to iCloud. There\u2019s also an\u00a0Auto Backup<\/em>feature that takes care of backups for you. Everything other than the videos will be backed up and when you re-install the app, all your conversations from the last backup will show up.<\/p>\n

6. Restore Messages<\/h2>\n

As stated above, restoring old backup on iPhone is pretty painless. As long as you have iCloud backup turned on, the restore process will take care of itself.<\/p>\n

When you reinstall the app, it will look for backups or copies of conversations on your SD Card, if it finds anything it will ask you if you want to restore it. If you have an old backup that you have stored on your PC, you can restore it manually on Android. Spot the\u00a0WhatsApp<\/em>\u00a0folder on the internal\/SD card storage that was created by the app and rename it to something else. Now paste in the folder that you had backed up to your phone and all your conversations should be back.<\/p>\n

7. Lock Down WhatsApp<\/h2>\n

Some things should be private, including your WhatsApp conversations. If you\u2019ve got a particularly snoopy friend or an overly concerned mum, it\u2019s best to put WhatsApp in lockdown mode.<\/p>\n

Android\u2019s file system is as open as a soccer field. So you can use a powerful file\u00a0explorer like ES, navigate to the WhatsApp folder and delete any space-consuming video or photo directly.<\/p>\n

WhatApp messages will now come through your Phone to the PC browser and the replies will be sent back to the app promptly.<\/p>\n
