{"id":195141,"date":"2016-03-02T12:30:25","date_gmt":"2016-03-02T12:30:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=195141"},"modified":"2016-03-02T12:30:25","modified_gmt":"2016-03-02T12:30:25","slug":"wr-teachers-sensitised-on-new-mental-health-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=195141","title":{"rendered":"W\/R teachers sensitised on new mental health act"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Western Regional Mental Health Sub-committee in a two day capacity building programme has educated teachers in the region on the new Mental Health Act.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The act is aimed at improving mental healthcare in Ghana by refocusing on the provision of mental healthcare services and combating stigmatization and discrimination against mentally ill people in schools and the country at large.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-195160\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_20160301_092224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160301_092224\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;j9u0L8BOQ2PrexF8C273KRwyj0RD8qB6&#8243;]Over 100 school health programme coordinators in the region were taken through the provisions of the act and how to provide care and support for pupils who are mentally unfit in schools.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking to <strong>Citi News<\/strong>, the Western\u00a0Regional Mental Health Coordinator, Charles Kwame Vigbedor, cited teachers as being in a strong position to identify unstable mental conditions\u00a0early.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cTeachers are in a better position to identify early unusual behaviors in pupils that may lead to unstable mental health conditions. Building their capacity to identify these signs and equip them with the provisions made for those children in the act (ACT 846) will help them take the right steps to seek early treatment for those signs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One\u00a0participant expressed appreciation for the training saying, \u201cI did not know that as schools and teachers we owe it a responsibility not to spread the confidential information on a pupil\u2019s health condition to others,\u00a0even among ourselves as teachers unreasonably. This we often thought it was a normal thing to do.
