{"id":19477,"date":"2014-05-19T10:46:31","date_gmt":"2014-05-19T10:46:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=19477"},"modified":"2014-05-19T10:46:31","modified_gmt":"2014-05-19T10:46:31","slug":"nigerias-boko-haram-crisis-kano-suicide-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=19477","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria&#8217;s Boko Haram crisis: Kano suicide attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"story_continues_1\">A suicide blast in a street full of bars and restaurants in the northern Nigerian city of Kano has killed four people, police say.<\/p>\n<p>One of those killed was a girl aged 12, they say.<\/p>\n<p>Witnesses say the explosion was caused by a bomb in a car in the mainly Christian area of Sabon Gari.<\/p>\n<p>The area has previously been targeted by Boko Haram Islamist militants but it is the first attack on Nigeria&#8217;s second biggest city for several months.<\/p>\n<p>More than 1,000 people have been killed in Boko Haram attacks this year but the government has said it has pushed the militants back into their strongholds in the north-eastern Borno state.<\/p>\n<p>This is where they seized more than 200 girls last month, in a case which shocked the world and prompted foreign powers to send military advisors to assist Nigeria&#8217;s army tackle the insurgency.<\/p>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"School girls abducted by Boko Haram (May 2014)\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/74941000\/jpg\/_74941277_6b200377-dbd3-4cec-a811-effc234ff4eb.jpg\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" \/><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Scene of a suspected Boko Haram suicide attack on a bus stop in the city of Kano in March 2013\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/74941000\/jpg\/_74941282_f7e3fd4f-6095-4d7b-abf9-617cc36a3bf9.jpg\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" \/><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>At least 22 people were killed in a suicide car bomb attack blamed on Boko Haram at a bus stop in Kano in March last year<\/div>\n<p>The street in Sabon Gari was full of revellers and street hawkers when a car exploded.<\/p>\n<p>The BBC&#8217;s Will Ross in Nigeria says that Sunday&#8217;s blast was so powerful that all that remains of the car is its engine. The blast could be heard from several miles away.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At about 22:00 [21:00 GMT], we heard an explosion and immediately mobilised to the scene where we discovered a suicide bomber&#8230; Five people, including the bomber, were killed,&#8221; Kano Police Commissioner Adelere Shinaba said.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the victims were &#8220;three men and a girl of about 12&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Kano is the largest city in the mainly Muslim north of Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>The bars and alcohol-sellers in its Sabon Gari area have been targeted on numerous other occasions.<\/p>\n<p>In January 2012, about 150 people died there in a series of co-ordinated attacks by Boko Haram.<\/p>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"bbc\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/74947000\/jpg\/_74947522_nigeriakanoabujaborno4640514.jpg\" width=\"464\" height=\"261\" \/><\/div>\n<p>The group is fighting to overthrow the Nigeria government and create an Islamic state.<\/p>\n<p>But it has often attacked Muslims, including preachers who disagree with its interpretation of Islam.<\/p>\n<p>The Nigerian authorities are continuing the search for the kidnapped schoolgirls kidnapped.<\/p>\n<p>The abducted schoolgirls, who include Christians and Muslims, were seized on 14 April.<\/p>\n<p>Boko Haram released a video last week showing more than 100 of the girls and offering an exchange for prisoners.<\/p>\n<p>African leaders meeting in Paris at the weekend agreed to wage &#8220;war&#8221; on Boko Haram, pledging to share intelligence and co-ordinate action against the group.<\/p>\n<p>French President Francois Hollande called Boko Haram a &#8220;major threat to West and Central Africa&#8221;, and said it had links with al-Qaeda&#8217;s North-African arm and &#8220;other terrorist organisations&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The unrest in Nigeria has not just been confined to the north.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month a car bomb in the capital Abuja killed at least 19 people and injured 60 more.<\/p>\n<p>The explosion happened close to a bus station where at least 70 people died in a bomb blast on 14 April.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div id=\"emp-27048076-18489\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/74267000\/jpg\/_74267998_74267996.jpg\" width=\"448\" height=\"252\" \/><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Source: BBC<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A suicide blast in a street full of bars and restaurants in the northern Nigerian city of Kano has killed four people, police say.
