Killer taxes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some of the decisions that did not go down well with Ghanaians in January 2016 include implementing new taxes approved by parliament in December 2016.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They include the introduction of the energy levies that saw an increment in prices of petroleum products, the rise in withholding tax as well as the implementation of a one percent tax on savings and interest.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-181197 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/wpid-Buying-petrol-at-filling-station.jpg\" alt=\"buying fuel\" width=\"553\" height=\"370\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Organised labour became furious over the hikes in petroleum products as well as the hikes in utility tariffs which was announced by the PURC in 2015 and demanded a drastic reduction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They embarked on a nationwide demonstration to have their demands met including an increment in the salaries of public sector workers by 50%.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_183337\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-183337\" style=\"width: 533px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-183337\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/labour-demo-ashanti-region-2.jpg\" alt=\"Organised Labour demo in the Ashanti Region\" width=\"533\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-183337\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Organised Labour demo in the Ashanti Region<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Government following several negotiations with Organised Labour subsequently reduced electricity prices for <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2016\/01\/27\/govt-reduces-electricity-tariffs-45-50-for-poor\/\" target=\"_blank\">low power consumers<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>More here:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The latest increase of between <strong>18 to 27 percent<\/strong> in the prices of petroleum products occasioned by the passage of the Energy Sector Levy (ESL) by Parliament last month, took effect Monday January 4.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">New information from Parliament revealed that the Ministry of Finance only sanctioned a 5% and a 2.9% increase in the price of petrol and diesel, which took effect from January 4, 2016.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Parliament to summon Finance Minister, Seth Terkper and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Moses Asaga for providing what it describes as <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2016\/01\/07\/parliament-to-summon-finance-minister-npa-boss-on-energy-levy\/\" target=\"_blank\">misleading information<\/a><\/strong><\/span> for the passage of the controversial energy sector levy.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Employment and Labour Relations Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, said any attempt to reverse the increased utility tariffs and new taxes will negatively affect government\u2019s <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2016\/01\/06\/dumsor-will-worsen-without-taxes-to-pay-ghc4-5b-debt-haruna-iddrisu\/\" target=\"_blank\">ability to fix the energy crisis<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>2. well with Ghanaians as it created fear and panic among citizens who believed that the two despite receiving assurance from the US government that they pose low risk could return to unleashing terror on them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Several groups, bodies and political parties, Members of Parliament put pressure on government to return the former inmates.<\/p>\n<figure #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2016\/01\/08\/hanna-tetteh-woyongo-to-face-parliament-over-guantanamo-detainees\/\" target=\"_blank\">to invite<\/a><\/strong><\/span> and question Foreign Affairs and Interior Ministers over the Guantanamo detainee\u2019s brouhaha.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mustapha Abdul Hamid, a lecturer at the Department of Religion and Human Values of the University of Cape Coast said <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2016\/01\/11\/gitmo-row-ghana-risks-attack-lecturer\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ghanaians must be alarmed<\/a><\/strong><\/span> by the decision of government to keep the two former Guantanamo Bay detainees despite wide public outcry.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The NPP is demanding the government disclose the terms of <a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2016\/01\/12\/disclose-reasons-for-smuggling-in-former-detainees-npp-to-govt\/\" target=\"_blank\">agreement<\/a> backing the decision to resettle the two former detainees and Yemeni terror suspects from the American Guantanamo Bay Prison.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The two Guantanamo Bay ex-detainees in Ghana <a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2016\/01\/11\/were-not-looking-for-revenge-gitmo-detainees-speak-audio\/\" target=\"_blank\">spoke for the first time<\/a> in an attempt to allay the fears of \u00a0apprehensive Ghanaians, who say they are security threats to the country.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">President John Mahama has appealed for <a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2016\/01\/12\/where-is-your-compassion-for-gitmo-detainees-mahama-asks-ghanaians\/\" target=\"_blank\">compassion<\/a> from Ghanaians for the Guantanamo Bay detainees who will spend two years in Ghana.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Ghana Catholic Bishops\u2019 conference \u00a0described government\u2019s decision to resettle the two former detainees from the American Guantanamo Bay Prison as \u201c<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" forces with other christian organisations against the move.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, described the ongoing saga over government\u2019s decision to host the two Guantanamo Bay detainees as yet another example of the <a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2016\/01\/19\/ex-gitmo-detainees-row-proves-mahama-is-a-failure-nana-addo\/\" target=\"_blank\">failure of leadership<\/a> on the part of President John Mahama.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>3. EC rejects new voters&#8217; register proposal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Following claims by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) that Ghana&#8217;s voters&#8217; register is bloated with names of foreigners and minors, the Electoral Commission constituted a five-member committee to hear the arguments and make recommendations.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_163348\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-163348\" style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-163348\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Charlotte-Osei-.jpg\" alt=\"Charlotte Osei, EC Chairman\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Charlotte-Osei-.jpg 960w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Charlotte-Osei--300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-163348\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Charlotte Osei, EC Chairman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Committee recommended that there was no\u00a0need for a new voters&#8217; register because the arguments were &#8220;unconvincing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Whereas the NDC welcomed the decision, the opposition NPP said they were disappointed at the EC and accused it bias.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>More here:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2016\/01\/01\/ndc-welcomes-ecs-decision-on-voters-register\/\" target=\"_blank\">welcomed the decision<\/a><\/strong><\/span> by the Electoral Commission (EC) not to compile a new register.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Convention Peoples Party (CPP) said <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2016\/01\/02\/cpp-unhappy-with-ecs-rejection-of-new-voters-register\/\" target=\"_blank\">it is not happy<\/a><\/strong><\/span> with the decision of the Electoral Commission to reject demands to compile a new voters\u2019register for the 2016 general elections.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pro-opposition pressure group, Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA), hinted of a <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2016\/01\/04\/lmvca-turns-to-court-after-ec-rejected-their-demands\/\" target=\"_blank\">court action<\/a><\/strong><\/span> to compel the Electoral Commission (EC) to compile a new voter\u2019s register.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The New Patriotic Party (NPP) described as \u201c<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2016\/01\/04\/ecs-decision-on-voters-register-disappointing-npp\/\" target=\"_blank\">disappointing<\/a><\/strong><\/span>,\u201d the Electoral Commission\u2019s decision not to compile a new voter\u2019s register.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">In defense of\u00a0its decision not\u00a0to\u00a0create a new voters\u2019 register for this year\u2019s general elections, the Electoral Commission (EC) revealed that the New Patriotic Party <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2016\/01\/05\/new-voters-register-npp-failed-to-prove-nationality-of-togolese-voters-ec\/\" target=\"_blank\">failed to provide sufficient evidence<\/a><\/strong><\/span> to support its claims that\u00a0there were foreign\u00a0nationals on the current register.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The NDC called for the arrest of the NPP&#8217;s running mate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for allegedly \u201c<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2016\/01\/06\/arrest-bawumia-over-claims-of-76000-togolese-on-voters-register-ndc\/\" target=\"_blank\">fabricating falsehood<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u201d about Ghana\u2019s voters\u2019 register.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>4. BNI arrests former NHIA boss\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>News of the arrest of the former NHIA boss,\u00a0Sylvester Mensah by the\u00a0Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) also surprised a lot of Ghanaians.<\/p>\n<p>Sylvester Mensah was in the grips of the BNI over allegations of financial malfeasance at the Authority under his watch.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_52326\"
