Congress, Greenstreet fended off competition from Samia Nkrumah, daughter of Ghana&#8217;s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah who had been widely tipped to emerge victorious.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_185897\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-185897\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-185897 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Samia-Nkrum-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Samia Nkrum\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-185897\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Samia Nkrumah was widely tipped to win the election<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Certified results reveal that Greenstreet polled well over half of the\u00a01,992 valid\u00a0votes cast.\u00a0 His tally of\u00a01,288 votes representing 64.7% saw him easily beat Samia&#8217;s total of\u00a0578 representing about\u00a029%.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph Agyapong and Bright Akwetey polled less than 10% of the votes combined, picking up 82 and 44 votes respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday&#8217;s congress saw over\u00a0two thousand four hundred (2,400) delegates converge on the\u00a0Accra International Trade Fair Centre which was decked out in the colours of the CPP.<\/p>\n<p>Despite an attempt by a failed aspirant, Onsy Nkrumah who <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2016\/01\/29\/onsy-sues-cpp-seeks-injunction-on-congress\/\" target=\"_blank\">filed a writ<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, to prevent the congress from taking place, the event went ahead as planned with voting commencing at 2 pm.<\/p>\n<p>The election of Greenstreet,\u00a0could represent a new beginning for the CPP who have, over the last few elections, seen their figures at the polls dwindle significantly.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_185888\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-185888\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-185888 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/CPP-voting-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"CPP voting\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-185888\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Voting proceeded with no incidents<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Talks of a merger with the PNC seemed to have stalled with both parties having elected representatives for the November elections while the CPP has <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2016\/01\/30\/cppdecides-delle-angrily-rejects-npps-alliance-request\/\" target=\"_blank\">rejected calls<\/a><\/strong><\/span> from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for an alliance between the two parties.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-185840 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Congress-7-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Congress 7\" width=\"620\" height=\"827\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At a debate organised by the party days before the congress, Greenstreet\u00a0stated that he was the best person to unite the party ahead of the polls in order for Ghana&#8217;s founding party\u00a0to usurp the dominance of the NPP and the governing\u00a0National Democratic Congress (NDC).<\/p>\n<p>The party has been criticised for failing to maintain a united front in recent times.<\/p>\n<p>CPP&#8217;s two previous presidential candidates in the 2008 and 2012 elections have since left;
