<\/p>\nGoogle is launching a new version of Chrome for iOS\u00a0today that promises to be both faster and more stable than previous versions.<\/p>\n
According to Google, Chrome 48 for iOS now crashes seventy percent less often and the browser should feel more responsive. JavaScript execution is also now\u00a0significantly faster.<\/p>\n
Until today, Google still used Apple\u2019s UIWebKit framework. While that allowed apps to render web pages (which is essentially what Google did), it was\u00a0sandboxed (for security reasons) and\u00a0JavaScript performance especially suffered under this model.<\/p>\n

Now, Google has switched to WKWebView, which Apple introduced with iOS 8. It\u2019s been a while since iOS 8 was state of the art, but Google notes that migrating to WKWebView \u201cbrought significant challenges.\u201d Specifically, Google notes that\u00a0the new framework didn\u2019t\u00a0feature an obvious way to manage cookies and form and SSL handling was also problematic. iOS 9 fixed some of these issues and now the team is ready to make the switch official.<\/p>\n
Thanks to moving to the new framework, the browser\u00a0isn\u2019t just faster, but also more stable \u2014 and even when a page crashes, the app itself now doesn\u2019t crash anymore. Instead, it will simply display an error page, just like on the desktop.<\/p>\n
While having the browser crash less often is great, it\u2019s also\u00a0now\u00a0also features faster JavaScript speeds and switching between pages should cause fewer reloads. Google also says scrolling should now be faster and more responsive.<\/p>\n
