At the moment, we are producing 157 million dollars so there is a surplus of production. Last year government spent 482 million dollars to expand distribution network in Accra and Tema and so that tells you that apart from production, we are also looking at how we can extend water to other communities.”

“I admit that there are really developed communities which do not fall on the Ghana Water Company’s main distribution list so those newly developed communities, there are programmes to connect them to the main Ghana Water Company distribution list but apart from that, as for production and distribution of water in Greater Accra, there has been a drastic improvement,” the Minister insisted.

Consumers of water have largely alleged that water from the Ghana Water Company is unclean hence their preference for sachet or bottled water.

Others have also adopted some methods to purify the water before usage.

But the Minister explained that Ghanaians are opting for sachet water because of their preference for it and not necessarily because the water from Ghana Water Company is unclean or that government has failed to improve access to portable water.

“If people are not getting the water that’s a different thing. If demand exceeds production, then you can argue that people are not getting water at all. But there is a lot of water in the system. Kpong alone is producing close to 50 million gallons. Infact before the expansion project, we were doing 40 million.. when you go to Teshie and you go to Tema, there is a lot of water in the system so I believe it is more of what people want.”

Mr. Ahi insisted the water the Ghana Water Company produces “is of high quality and meets international standards.”

–

By: Marian Ansah/citifmonline.com/Ghana
Follow @EfeAnsah

The Deputy Minister of Water Resources , Works and Housing, Sampson Ahi, has rubbished suggestions that more Ghanaians are now opting for sachet water because of the poor quality of water from the Ghana Water Company, and in some cases, the lack of access to water.
