{"id":181115,"date":"2016-01-12T08:45:50","date_gmt":"2016-01-12T08:45:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=181115"},"modified":"2016-01-12T08:45:50","modified_gmt":"2016-01-12T08:45:50","slug":"star-wars-force-holds-us-box-office","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=181115","title":{"rendered":"Star Wars force holds US box office"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Star Wars: The Force Awakens has stayed top of the North American box office for a fourth week, beating Golden Globe winner The Revenant.<\/p>\n<p>According to weekend studio estimates, Star Wars took $41.6m (\u00a328.5m) in the US and Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Western The Revenant, which won three Golden Globes, came second after taking $38m (\u00a326m) on its opening weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Comedy Daddy&#8217;s Home, with Will Ferrell&#8217;s DJ seeking his stepchildren&#8217;s love, took $15m (\u00a310m) in week three.<\/p>\n<p>The continued success of Star Wars means it has now become the biggest movie to date in the US and Canada.<\/p>\n<p>It has become the first to make more than $800m (\u00a3550m), having taken $812m (\u00a3558m) so far.<\/p>\n<p>Its global total now stands at $1.73bn (\u00a31.19bn), according to producers Walt Disney, which means it has overtaken Jurassic World, which made $1.67bn (\u00a31.15bn).<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/1606C\/production\/_87602209_revenant.jpg\" alt=\"The Revenant\" width=\"530\" height=\"298\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>The film is therefore the third most successful movie in the world to date.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of it stands Titanic at number two, which made $2.2bn (\u00a3150m) from 1997-98, and Avatar, still holds the number one spot with $2.8bn (\u00a3192m) taken from 2009-10.<\/p>\n<p>A record-breaking opening in China last week has made a huge contribution to the global success of Star Wars, which made $53m (\u00a336m) in its debut weekend, described as &#8220;spectacular&#8221; by Disney&#8217;s executive vice-president Dave Hollis.<\/p>\n<p>The Revenant, from Alejandrao Inarritu and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, tells the story of an 1820s frontiersman who gets mauled by a bear. Despite coming in second, it defied expectations as its hard-hitting content was not considered a draw to a large section of the audience. As such, it was on limited release in New York and Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>However, the movie had been heavily tipped for success at this year&#8217;s Academy Awards, even before Sunday&#8217;s Globes glory, which could have contributed to its strong audience draw.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s very graphic, it&#8217;s very real,&#8221; said 20th Century Fox&#8217;s Chris Aronson. `&#8221;You watch this and you&#8217;re going to feel cold.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Having the film open after Star Wars has helped give it a chance to raise its profile, he added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Now I think there&#8217;s a specialness to this film that might have been lost earlier.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Of the Top 10 films this weekend, only supernatural horror The Forest was a new release and it managed to come fourth even with all the competition, after taking $13.1m (\u00a39m).<\/p>\n<div class=\"responsive-table-container\">\n<table class=\"story-table\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th class=\"story-table__heading__col\">US BOX OFFICE TOP FIVE<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"story-table__row__even\">\n<td>1.
