{"id":180708,"date":"2016-01-10T18:06:41","date_gmt":"2016-01-10T18:06:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=180708"},"modified":"2016-01-10T18:06:41","modified_gmt":"2016-01-10T18:06:41","slug":"british-junior-doctors-urged-to-suspend-planned-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=180708","title":{"rendered":"British junior doctors urged to suspend planned strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Junior doctors should suspend Tuesday&#8217;s strike action over pay and conditions while talks continue, the chief medical officer for England has urged.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dame Sally Davies said the action by the British Medical Association (BMA) would &#8220;lead to patients suffering&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The strike begins across England at 08:00 GMT, from when junior doctors will only provide emergency care.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The BMA said the strikes &#8220;demonstrated the strength of feeling amongst the profession&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It announced three spells of strike action in England in November, after negotiations with the government ended without resolution.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Issues being disputed by the BMA and NHS include weekend pay.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>&#8216;Frustration&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;As a doctor, I can understand the anger and frustration felt by many junior doctors at this time,&#8221; Dame Sally said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;In part, this dispute is a symptom of frustration and low morale that has been building for decades and the strain that a career in medicine can place on your work-life balance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;Junior doctors are the backbone of the NHS, working long and anti-social hours&#8230; It is vital that, as senior medical leaders, we ask ourselves whether we are doing everything we can to ensure our junior colleagues feel valued.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The planned strikes are set to take place from:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">08:00 Tuesday 12 January to 08:00 Wednesday 13 January (emergency care will be staffed)<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">08:00 Tuesday 26 January to 08:00 Thursday 28 January (emergency care will be staffed)<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">08:00 to 17:00 Wednesday 10 February (full walk-out)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Conciliation service Acas has confirmed that talks between the BMA and NHS bosses will continue next week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>What has caused the dispute?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Junior doctors&#8217; leaders are objecting to the prospect of a new contract.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The government has described the current arrangements as &#8220;outdated&#8221; and &#8220;unfair&#8221;, pointing out they were introduced in the 1990s.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ministers drew up plans to change the contract in 2012, but talks broke down last year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The government has indicated it will impose the new contract next year in England.
