Consumers of both electricity and water will from today [Monday, December 14] pay more for the two utilities as the recent increment announced by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) officially takes effect today.<\/p>\n
The 59.2 percent increment for electricity<\/a><\/span><\/strong> and 67.2 percent for water, have been met with stiff opposition from Ghanaians, who are citing the harsh economic situation and the energy crises as reasons for their rejection.<\/p>\n [contextly_sidebar id=”0d7ziHgrtjIeQ2PwPF5iCIz9d7CMu4RJ”]One consumer who shared his frustrations about the recent increment to Citi News<\/strong>, said :\u201cWhen the light is not there, how can they increase it? So they have to find a solution before increasing it.”<\/p>\n \u201cIf they will give us the light, we too we will pay; but if they don\u2019t give us the light how can we pay,” another consumer\u00a0asked.<\/p>\n Another stated that, he is willing to pay more for electricity tariffs if measures are taken to address the inconsistent power supply.<\/p>\n “My problem is that, if the increment will get the lights to work then I don\u2019t have any problem because if you don\u2019t work you cannot pay salaries, you cannot pay your workers …\u201d<\/p>\n Meanwhile the Trade Union Congress (TUC) will today [Monday] meet officials of the PURC over the recent increments.<\/p>\n The TUC says the increment is ill-timed and wants it to be implemented\u00a0next year.<\/p>\n Today\u2019s meeting according to the TUC Deputy Secretary, Dr. Yaw Baah, is to impress on the PURC to reduce the tariffs.<\/p>\n –<\/p>\n By: Marian Ansah\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana
