Road users in Ghana may be\u00a0asked to pay more at toll booths in the coming months.<\/p>\n
This is because the Parliamentary Select Committee on Roads and Transport, is proposing an increase in road tolls.<\/p>\n
[contextly_sidebar id=”lPwf4jZ0CbenZEsn8AHn0evKcMLrKyG5″]According to the Chairman of the select Committee, Theophilus Tetteh Chai, the National Road Fund receives 300 million cedis out of a possible 850 million cedis; a situation he said hinders the development and maintenance of roads in the country.<\/p>\n
According to him, \u201cthe purpose of the road fund was to ensure that adequate resources would be mobilized for road maintenance.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr. Tetteh Chai also stated that the resources available for road maintenance are not enough to meet the required needs.<\/p>\n
\u201cA lot more resources are needed to ensure that maintenance works can be carried through; but because resources are not enough to meet all our road maintenance needs, there is always a short fall,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery year, there is a shortfall and as such, we are not able to carry out maintenance of road networks.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr. Tetteh Chai indicated that a potential increment would significantly reduce their yearly monetary shortfall and improve the maintenance of road networks across the country.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf the Road Fund, that is the tolls, are also increased, that will be able to cater for\u00a0the shortfall, then a lot of road maintenance activities can be done,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
