The Urban Agriculture Network, an NGO promoting peri-urban agriculture in the Northern Region has inaugurated a modern shea-butter processing and youth training center at Malshegu in the Sagnarigu district of the Northern Region.<\/p>\n

With support from ActionAid Ghana, the project being sponsored by a USA based charity organization called Empower formed part of URBANET\u2019s social interventions meant to economically empower women in deprived communities.<\/p>\n

URBANET\u2019s Executive Director, Zakaria Abdul Rashid at the inauguration told Citi News on the sidelines that the development is in line with the organization\u2019s project christened, \u201cEmpowering women and young ladies for sustainable livelihoods.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said the project among other expectations sought to modernize the shea-butter industry in the Sagnarigu district.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe current expansion of the project includes a pavilion as shed, office room, an additional store room and a drying platform.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zakaria Abdul Rashid posited that school dropped out young ladies in the area will take advantage of the project to improve their skills development on shea-butter processing and basic management processes.<\/p>\n

He said the project will also be used as a platform for discussions with young girls on reproductive health education and gender based violence.<\/p>\n

\u201c60 young girls of ages between 15-24 will be placed as apprentices at the centres to learn practically quality shea-butter processing: the young girls will be taught basic business management skills and how to set-up business.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe young girls will also learn about sexual and reproductive health and they will be supported to develop small business plans to access credit to start their shea-butter processing businesses,\u201d he disclosed.<\/p>\n

The URBANET Boss revealed that his outfit in 2015 disbursed almost GHc80.000.00 cedis as a revolving fund to about 639 women and 25 men to expand their shea-butter businesses.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis project targeted at empowering women is only one of the series of interventions implemented in the Sagnarigu district by URBANET and ActionAid Ghana to promote women economic empowerment. In particular, we have since 2008 provided micro credit services to women groups in the district.\u201d<\/p>\n

ActionAid Ghana\u2019s Northern Regional Manager, Esther Boateng reaffirmed the organization\u2019s commitment to sponsor more of such projects to empower women.<\/p>\n

She said the organization will deepen its collaboration with URBANET and other allied bodies to improve the livelihood of the marginalized in society.<\/p>\n

She admonished beneficiaries of the Malshegu Ngangwuni shea-butter processing and youth training centre to jealously maintain the project.<\/p>\n

Alhassan Rukaya on behalf of her colleagues commended URBANET and its development partners for the continuous support.<\/p>\n
