{"id":16269,"date":"2014-05-03T17:05:56","date_gmt":"2014-05-03T17:05:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=16269"},"modified":"2014-05-03T17:05:56","modified_gmt":"2014-05-03T17:05:56","slug":"microsoft-includes-xp-users-in-internet-explorer-fix","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=16269","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft includes XP users in Internet Explorer fix"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"story_continues_1\">Microsoft has said users of its Windows XP operating system will also get the security update it has issued to fix a flaw in the Internet Explorer browser.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/b\/msrc\/archive\/2014\/05\/01\/out-of-band-release-to-address-microsoft-security-advisory-2963983.aspx\">It issued the update<\/a>\u00a0on Thursday to fix a bug that let hackers gain access and user rights to computers.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft ended support for Windows XP earlier this month, ceasing to issue bug fixes or security updates for it.<\/p>\n<p>But the firm said it decided to make an exception as the flaw was discovered just days after the support ended.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Even though Windows XP is no longer supported by Microsoft and is past the time we normally provide security updates, we&#8217;ve decided to provide an update for all versions of Windows XP,&#8221; Adrienne Hall, general manager of Trustworthy Computing at Microsoft,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/b\/microsoft_blog\/archive\/2014\/05\/01\/updating-internet-explorer-and-driving-security.aspx\">said in a blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We made this exception based on the proximity to the end of support for Windows XP.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The flaw was reported earlier this week and there had been uncertainty over whether XP users would get the update when it was released.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Tested and ready&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"story_continues_2\">The flaw affected Internet Explorer (IE) versions 6 to 11 and Microsoft said it was aware of &#8220;limited, targeted attacks&#8221; to exploit it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.netmarketshare.com\/browser-market-share.aspx?qprid=2&amp;qpcustomd=0&amp;qpsp=168&amp;qpnp=12&amp;qptimeframe=M\">According to NetMarket Share<\/a>, the IE versions account for more than 50% of the global web browser market.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft said that hackers could exploit the flaw by hosting a &#8220;specially crafted website&#8221; designed to exploit the vulnerability.<\/p>\n<p>If users visited the website, hackers could use it to gain access to their computer and get the same rights as the machine&#8217;s user.<\/p>\n<p>However, hackers would have needed to convince users to view and interact with the website, and would have had &#8220;no way to force users&#8221; to view the content otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Microsoft said its security update fixed the flaw.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This update is fully tested and ready for release for all affected versions of the browser,&#8221; the firm said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The majority of customers have automatic updates enabled and will not need to take any action because protections will be downloaded and installed automatically.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Microsoft has said users of its Windows XP operating system will also get the security update it has issued to fix a flaw in the Internet Explorer browser.
