A police recruitment session is due to be held at the hotel next week.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant Chief Constable Mark Hamilton said the bomb had the potential to harm anyone in the area and that those involved had shown a &#8220;total disregard for human life&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are obviously very thankful that this attack was thwarted and that no one was killed or seriously injured,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Police said no warning was given and blamed dissident republicans for carrying out the attack.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Potent reminder&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Northern Ireland Secretary of State Theresa Villiers condemned those responsible.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/1169C\/production\/_86042317_millfield2.jpg\" alt=\"A police cordon at Millfield in Belfast\" width=\"576\" height=\"324\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\">\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;This device was intended to cause injury and sought to stop those people who want to secure a career in policing to serve their community and make Northern Ireland a better place,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is a potent reminder of the threat the police and public still face from terrorism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The contemptible actions of those behind this incident are an affront to everyone who wants a peaceful and prosperous Northern Ireland.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sinn F\u00e9in MLA Raymond McCartney said those who had left the bomb had &#8220;nothing whatsoever to offer the people of Derry&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Reckless actions&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Not only have they brought disruption to the city, they have also endangered the safety of hotel staff, guests, customers and passers by,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/FB7B\/production\/_85997346_omaghalert.jpg\" alt=\"Scene of the security alert in Omagh\" width=\"552\" height=\"311\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Image caption<\/span><span class=\"media-caption__text\">A large section of Omagh town centre was cordoned off<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;Their reckless actions are so far out of touch with the views of the vast majority of the people of Derry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Two police recruitment events are under way in Belfast and Omagh after alerts at the planned venues ended.<\/p>\n<p>Belfast Met&#8217;s Millfield campus and the Strule Arts Centre in Omagh, County Tyrone, were evacuated and nearby roads were closed after the alerts began on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Police said on Saturday that nothing untoward was found during searches at both sites.<\/p>\n<p>A planned republican protest is taking place outside the Millfield campus.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/C87C\/production\/_86042315_millfield.jpg\" alt=\"Cars being diverted at Millfield in Belfast\" width=\"564\" height=\"317\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"media-caption__text\">Motorists in Belfast were diverted through the city centre as a result of the alert<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A large part of the town centre in Omagh was evacuated as a result of the alert at the Strule Arts Centre.<\/p>\n<p>Shops, businesses and the town&#8217;s bus depot were closed and students at South West College were sent home.<\/p>\n<p>The alert at the Millfield campus caused disruption to rush-hour traffic in Belfast city centre.<\/p>\n<p>Anne Connolly, the chair of the Northern Ireland Policing Board, said &#8220;intimidation and threat&#8221; would not stop people choosing policing as a career.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Police have said a suspicious object found in the grounds of a hotel in Londonderry was a bomb.
