{"id":156987,"date":"2015-10-03T14:16:14","date_gmt":"2015-10-03T14:16:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=156987"},"modified":"2015-10-03T16:41:18","modified_gmt":"2015-10-03T16:41:18","slug":"pay-us-now-or-no-work-psychiatric-nurses-to-employment-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=156987","title":{"rendered":"Pay us now or no work \u2013 Psychiatric nurses to Employment Minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nurses at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital have defied a directive by the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Haruna Iddrisu urging them to call off their strike.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Haruna Iddrisu had described the strike as \u201cunacceptable,\u201d saying \u201cindeed you just don\u2019t walk through a strike as it pleases you, there are laws which govern strikes and there are processes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;grQ9aRMa8Krw3S2nAZObJAJkneCrnKrS&#8221;]Nurses at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/10\/01\/accra-psychiatric-nurses-declare-indefinite-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\">laid down their tools<\/a><\/strong><\/span> last Thursday over unpaid salaries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The strike follows what the nurses describe as deceit and failure on the part of government to fulfill promises to pay them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meanwhile, the Employment Minister had urged the aggrieved nurses to <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/10\/02\/return-to-work-minister-orders-striking-psychiatric-nurses\/\" target=\"_blank\">rescind their decision<\/a><\/strong><\/span> and return to work because government is finalizing moves to settle their arrears.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI will urge them to return back to work. I will honour my word and I stand by the assurances that were given.\u00a0 It is work in progress, it is not a matter that we have not acted on,\u201d he promised.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But speaking on <strong>Citi FM<\/strong>\u2019s news analysis programme, <strong>The Big Issue<\/strong> on Saturday, one of the spokespersons of the aggrieved nurses, Christian Adisenu said they will only return to work when government settles their salary arrears.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWhen this issue started we did not just get up and say we have a right to go on strike and then we embarked on strike. It is important to state clear that our people feel that it is their right to be paid when they work. The question that we should be asking is that is it also legal for someone to be working without being paid?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Christian Adisenu said that the nurses are not happy with the turn of events saying \u201cwhen they heard the Minister&#8217;s statement on air most of them were annoyed.
