{"id":149255,"date":"2015-09-06T14:14:49","date_gmt":"2015-09-06T14:14:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=149255"},"modified":"2015-09-06T14:14:49","modified_gmt":"2015-09-06T14:14:49","slug":"tamale-also-rejects-proposals-for-utility-tariff-increment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=149255","title":{"rendered":"Tamale also rejects proposals for utility tariff increment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"yiv0218647738MsoNormal\">Some participants at a forum organised by the Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission (PURC) in\u00a0Tamale, have kicked against the proposed increment in utility tariffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0218647738MsoNormal\">The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) are requesting a 100 percent increment in tariffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0218647738MsoNormal\">They argue that if approved, it will mitigate the impact of the high cost of production.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0218647738MsoNormal\">As arbitrator between the service providers and consumers, the PURC is holding nationwide public fora on the proposals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0218647738MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/image.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-149284  aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/image.jpg\" alt=\"image\" width=\"650\" height=\"485\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/image.jpg 2592w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/image-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/image-1024x765.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1441544388569_2538\" class=\"yiv0218647738MsoNormal\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1441544388569_2537\">Majority of the participants who took turns to share their views, kicked against any upwardly adjustment of the tariffs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0218647738MsoNormal\">They complained about poor services from the service providers, especially with regards to the ongoing nationwide load shedding exercise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0218647738MsoNormal\">Ghanaians in the <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/08\/31\/another-utility-tariff-increase-looms\/\" target=\"_blank\">Eastern Region, also kicked against the proposals<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, when the PURC held a public forum in Koforidua recently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0218647738MsoNormal\">In the Ashanti Region, barbers and other <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/09\/02\/barbers-others-threaten-demo-over-possible-utility-tariff-hike\/\" target=\"_blank\">informal sector workers threatened to hit the streets<\/a><\/strong><\/span> to demonstrate, if the PURC approves of the upward adjustment of the tariffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0218647738MsoNormal\">The PURC\u2019s Director of Public Affairs, Nana Yaa Jantuah on the sidelines of the Tamale forum told <strong>Citi News<\/strong>, \u201cThe essence of this is legal because the law mandates the PURC to organize public hearings for the utilities whenever they ask for a tariff increase and this process is a major review process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0218647738MsoNormal\">\u00a0She said the service providers have varied challenges which required enough capital to fix them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0218647738MsoNormal\">\u201cThey have different challenges: ECG have their own challenges with expansion and VRA have with crude oil and non availability of electricity and the transmission lines need to be strengthened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1441544388569_2539\" class=\"yiv0218647738MsoNormal\">She however said the Commission will ensure that consumers will have to pay realistic tariffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0218647738MsoNormal\">Nana Yaw Jantuah added that the Commission will critically\u00a0interrogate the service provider proposals to arrive at a reasonable decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0218647738MsoNormal\">She disclosed the service providers\u2019 intention to connect all government institutions with prepaid meters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0218647738MsoNormal\">\u201cGoing forward that is the mechanism we are going to put in place to ensure that people don\u2019t owe the utilities as much as they are owing now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0218647738MsoNormal\">&#8211;<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0218647738MsoNormal\">By: Abdul Karim Naatogmah\/Citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some participants at a forum organised by the Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission (PURC) in\u00a0Tamale, have kicked against the proposed increment in utility tariffs.
