{"id":145259,"date":"2015-08-20T18:20:40","date_gmt":"2015-08-20T18:20:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=145259"},"modified":"2015-08-21T11:26:17","modified_gmt":"2015-08-21T11:26:17","slug":"jimmy-carter-announces-cancer-has-spread-to-his-brain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=145259","title":{"rendered":"Jimmy Carter announces cancer has spread to his brain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jimmy Carter\u2019s melanoma, a form of skin cancer, has been discovered in four places on his brain and is likely to \u201cshow up other places in my body\u201d, the former US president said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Carter told a news conference he would be undergoing radiation treatments and injections to fight the cancer, which was discovered after he underwent surgery to remove a growth on his liver, where melanoma also had been discovered, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Carter, 91, first announced the cancer diagnosis last week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was confined to my liver, and the operation had already removed it,\u201d Carter, the 39th president, in an appearance at the Carter Center in Atlanta.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel good. I haven\u2019t felt any weakness or disability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a matter-of-fact appearance, Carter said he had \u201ccomplete confidence\u201d in his doctors at Emory University and that \u201cI\u2019m going to cut back fairly dramatically on my obligations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t really anticipate how I\u2019ll be feeling obviously,\u201d Carter said. \u201cBut I\u2019ll have to defer quite substantially to my doctors in charge of my treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter said he had received the news of the spreading cancer \u201cat ease \u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was surprisingly at ease,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve had a wonderful life &#8230; I\u2019ve had an exciting, gratifying existence. I felt surprisingly at ease, much more than my wife was.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut now I feel it\u2019s in the hands of God, and I\u2019ll be prepared for what comes. I\u2019m looking forward to a new adventure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every member of Carter\u2019s immediate family from childhood \u2013 two sisters, a brother and both parents \u2013 died from cancer. All were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Carter had been undergoing regular checkups for the disease.<br \/>\nCarter said he had told his wife of 69 years, Rosalynn, 88, about his potential cancer in June.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found out toward the end of May that I had a spot on my liver that was suspect,\u201d Carter said. \u201cI didn\u2019t tell Rosalynn until about the 15th of June. When I found out that I had definitely cancer, key members of my family came in to the Carter Center and I gave them a briefing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter said he still hoped to make a scheduled trip to Nepal in November to work with Habitat for Humanity, a charity in which he has been deeply involved that provides shelter for the needy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really wanted to go to Nepal to build houses,\u201d Carter said. \u201cThis would have been our 33rd year of going, without fail \u2026 But if it interrupts our treatment regimen, then I think I need to get the treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter said he would have four rounds of radiation and injections, spaced three weeks apart.<\/p>\n<p>After his one term in the White House ended in 1981, Carter went on to the longest, and one of the most distinguished, post-presidential careers in history. Under the\u00a0aegis of the Carter Center, he has traveled the world as a peace broker and public health and human rights advocate.
