The Ghana Broadcasting Cooperation (GBC) has revealed that it collected a paltry sum of\u00a0GH\u00a275 nationwide as revenue generated from TV license in 2013.<\/p>\n

This was revealed by the Director General of GBC, Major Albert Don-Chebe (Rtd) during a forum organised by the Daily Graphic on the payment of TV license in Accra today.<\/p>\n

The forum created a platform to debate on efficient ways of funding public service broadcasting.<\/p>\n

The Director General also called for a greater collaboration to support public service broadcasting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

GIBA defends 15% allocation<\/strong><\/p>\n

For his party, the\u00a0former Chairman of Radio Eye and former Chairman of the Ghana @50 secretariat\u00a0Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby kicked against the 15% proceeds from the TV license allocated to the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA).<\/p>\n

His argument as he puts it, is emanating from GIBA’S inability to account for monies given to the association during the Ghana@50 celebration some 7 years ago.<\/p>\n

He pointed out that GIBA is a private entity and as such should not be funded by government at the expense of public broadcasters.<\/p>\n

But President of GIBA, Akwesi Agyeman defended the 15% allocation saying they have been rendering services to citizens on behalf of government hence must also benefit from the TV licence proceeds.<\/p>\n

He emphasized that there is no law governing the sharing of the proceeds from TV licence to be allocated to private broadcasters.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, collection of the TV licence will begin on August 1.<\/p>\n
