Head of the economic Division at the institute of Statistical Social and Economic Research (ISSER) Dr. Charles Ackah has said Ghana is sitting on a time bomb due to the worsening graduate unemployment situation in the country.<\/p>\n
This to him is because the current economic situation has drastically reduced both the government and the private sector\u2019s capacity to employ people.<\/p>\n
\u00a0[contextly_sidebar id=”ezvE1MUyIdjl2YRk7uvCjLgxy5l9JzZJ”]Currently there are over\u00a0200,000 unemployed graduates in Ghana.<\/p>\n
In addition to that, over\u00a071,000\u00a0will this year be pushed onto the job market from both private and public tertiary institutions.<\/p>\n
Speaking in an interview with Citi News<\/strong>, Dr. Ackah\u00a0 insisted that one\u2019s tendency to land a job is now highly decreased by higher education, hence his caution.<\/p>\n He said in the past, \u201cunemployment was related to lack of education but now, that is not the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cActually it is related to education. The more educated you are, the likely you are going to be unemployed. There is a gloom business for them, where are they going to get their jobs?\u201d he questioned.<\/p>\n Dr Ackah said the only way they can get jobs is to \u201cset up their own businesses\u201d adding that most of them \u201care interested in that.\u201d<\/p>\n This he said is \u201cbecause they think it\u2019s difficult, they don\u2019t have the requisite training, they don\u2019t have access to capital, and they don\u2019t have access to the support services. I think we are sitting on a time bomb but I hope the bomb doesn\u2019t actually explode because when you talk to people they are really frustrated.\u201d<\/p>\n In a related development, the Ghana Employers\u2019 Associations had said that close to 13,000 workers were rendered jobless<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>after they were sacked<\/span><\/span> in the first quarter of 20105 alone.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) has warned that unemployment will continue to rise<\/a><\/strong> <\/span>in the coming years, as the global economy enters a new period combining slower growth, widening inequalities and turbulence.<\/p>\n –<\/p>\n By: Godwin A.
