{"id":131657,"date":"2015-07-05T14:04:31","date_gmt":"2015-07-05T14:04:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=131657"},"modified":"2015-07-05T14:04:31","modified_gmt":"2015-07-05T14:04:31","slug":"cubas-fidel-castro-in-rare-appearance-at-cheese-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=131657","title":{"rendered":"Cuba&#8217;s Fidel Castro in rare appearance at cheese meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro has appeared in public for the first time in more than a month.<\/p>\n<p>State television showed images of Mr Castro at a meeting with cheese experts near the capital, Havana.<\/p>\n<p>Fidel Castro, 88, handed power to his younger brother Raul in 2006 after struggling to recover from illness.<\/p>\n<p>His appearance comes days after Cuba and the United States announced they were reopening embassies in each other&#8217;s capitals on 20 July.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Castro is rarely seen in public, and secrecy about his health means his public appearances are scrutinised by the media.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape full-width has-caption\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/2DA5\/production\/_84058611_028015045-1.jpg\" alt=\"null\" width=\"745\" height=\"419\" \/><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"media-caption__text\">Fidel Castro spoke for more than four hours to the cheese masters who were giving a training course<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The historic thaw between the old Cold War enemies was announced on 17 December, in joint media conferences by Presidents Barack Obama and Raul Castro.<\/p>\n<p>There was no immediate comment from Fidel Castro, and analysts said the rapprochement would not have happened if he was still in power.<\/p>\n<p>Just over a month later, he broke his silence in a letter published on the Cuban Communist Party newspaper, Granma.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t trust the policy of the United States\u2026 but this does not mean I reject a pacific solution to the conflicts,&#8221; he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Relations had been frozen since the early 1960s when the US broke links and imposed a trade embargo on Cuba.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro has appeared in public for the first time in more than a month.
