{"id":131258,"date":"2015-07-04T07:15:24","date_gmt":"2015-07-04T07:15:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=131258"},"modified":"2015-07-03T17:44:35","modified_gmt":"2015-07-03T17:44:35","slug":"ama-ata-aidoo-celebrated-in-windhoek","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=131258","title":{"rendered":"Ama Ata Aidoo\u00a0celebrated in Windhoek"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Afric Avenir and Spoken Word Namibia last Monday held the screening of the Ghanaian documentary \u201cThe Art of Ama Ata Aidoo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The 2014, 78-minute film was directed by Yaba Badoe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The programme also involved members of Namibian Spoken Word reciting some of Ama Ata Aidoo\u2019s prose and poetry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The programme was made possible through financial support of the Finnish Embassy in Namibia and took place at the Goethe Institut. The Ghana High Commission provided moral and patriotic support.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Art of Ama Ata Aidoo, celebrates Ghana\u2019s acclaimed Pan-African feminist, poet, playwright and novelist and provides a fascinating insight into her life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is also an important resource for students and teachers of African literature, as well as lovers of African women\u2019s writing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">By celebrating one woman\u2019s contribution to Africa\u2019s Renaissance The Art of Ama Ata Aidoo will inspire others to be equally courageous.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It explores the artistic contribution of one of Africa\u2019s foremost woman writers, a trailblazer for an entire generation of exciting new talent and charts Ama Ata Aidoo\u2019s creative journey in a life that spans seven decades from colonial Ghana through the tumultuous era of independence to a more sober present day Africa where nurturing women\u2019s creative talent remains as hard as ever.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Over the course of a year the film follows Aidoo as she returns home to her ancestral village in the Central Region of Ghana, launches her latest collection of short stories in Accra, and travels to the University of California, Santa Barbara to attend the premier of her seminal play about the slave trade, Anowa.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With contributions from Carole Boyce Davies, Nana Wilson- Tagoe and Vincent Odamtten, The Art of Ama Ata Aidoo gives a fascinating insight into the life of a feminist poet and novelist and brings Aidoo\u2019s writing to new audiences.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a message to the audience, she said, \u201cI was absolutely thrilled to learn from Yaba Badoe that her documentary on me and my work is getting premiered in Namibia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hearing about this event took me back to my brief visit to Windhoek, and how absolutely wonderful that was\u2026Over the years, there have been one or two occasions when I\u2019d come close to returning to Namibia to lie low and write.
