{"id":130780,"date":"2015-07-02T13:13:07","date_gmt":"2015-07-02T13:13:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=130780"},"modified":"2015-07-02T13:13:07","modified_gmt":"2015-07-02T13:13:07","slug":"we-have-enough-dollars-to-support-the-cedi-bog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=130780","title":{"rendered":"We have enough dollars to support the cedi &#8211; BoG"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has assured it has enough foreign exchange to pump into the economy to stabilize the cedi against major foreign currencies.<\/p>\n<p>The Bank of Ghana last week hinted of moves to inject $20 million daily\u00a0\u00a0into the money market to stabilize the cedi.<\/p>\n<p>The move follows the continuous poor performance of the cedi against all the major foreign currencies.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;qsk6R5hUYIFEkhC9Kp4Oba2ZcAZrJQuS&#8221;]This year alone the cedi has depreciated in excess of 25 percent against the dollar.<\/p>\n<p>However the bank of Ghana&#8217;s move has been questioned by a number of economists who claim the central bank cannot afford to <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/06\/26\/bog-to-release-20-million-daily-to-stabilise-cedi\/#sthash.X3FZsdcd.LaL0HPCr.dpbs\" target=\"_blank\">pump 20 million dollars daily<\/a><\/strong><\/span> into the money market.<\/p>\n<p>Financial analyst, Sydney Casely Hayford for example <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/06\/27\/bog-is-lying-about-pumping-20-million-to-save-cedi-sydney\/#sthash.mZyRp1dF.dpbs\" target=\"_blank\">accused the Bank of Ghana of lying<\/a><\/strong><\/span> to Ghanaians that it is injecting $20 million daily\u00a0into the money market to stabilize the cedi.<\/p>\n<p>According to him \u201cthey [BoG] are lying to us, they can\u2019t afford $20 million a day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The financial analyst argued that if the BoG can make $600 million in a month, then going for the bailout package from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was not necessary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you have $600 million, why are we going to take $918 million from the IMF? It\u2019s not possible. The Bank of Ghana cannot make $600 million in a month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Per his estimation, \u201c$20 million a day will translate to about $600 million in a month.\u00a0 Where is the money coming from? This is where the whole problem starts. They can\u2019t even find $45 million to pay for the Bankswitch case. If you had $20 million to sink why would you not lend government $45 million to pay for the Bankswitch case and avoid the so called GH\u00a21 billion debt that we are hearing it\u2019s supposed to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_49441\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49441\" style=\"width: 530px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/15e196ef72f800597613030bb568df1f_L.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-49441 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/15e196ef72f800597613030bb568df1f_L.jpg\" alt=\"Governor of BoG, Dr Kofi Wampah \" width=\"530\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/15e196ef72f800597613030bb568df1f_L.jpg 530w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/15e196ef72f800597613030bb568df1f_L-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-49441\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Governor of BoG, Dr Kofi Wampah<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But the assistant director of the research department of the Bank of Ghana Francis Kumah downplays his fears.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Going forward as to whether we will have enough reserves to be able to continue this mixture, I think like the minister rightly pointed out, our foreign exchange build up is also seasonal. He eloquently talked about how lopsided the second half is when it comes to building reserves; currently in the intervening period what we do is to do SWAPS. I think we have enough to as it were do the intervention awaiting the Eurobond and the cocoa money inflows&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Some players in the financial sector have warned the cedi will continue to decline against major foreign currencies this year.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Executive Officer of Dalex Financial Services, Ken Thompson earlier predicted that the cedi will continue to fall against major trading currencies unless there is a deliberate\u00a0effort to change the economy\u2019s import dependency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn February this year\u2026 I said the cedi was going to completely fall, and I said the IMF target will be missed and reading between the lines, it looks like the target has been missed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ken Thompson said Ghana\u2019s \u201calcoholic economy\u201d has allowed the\u00a0demand for the US dollar to outstrip supply hence the free fall of the cedi. \u201cGhana has an alcoholic economy\u2026 We are addicted to foreign goods and services. Because of that addiction, there is a huge demand for dollars.
