In a study from Texas A&M University, people admitted to misleading their partner a third of the time. When they got hitched, that number dropped to 1 in 10\u2014but still, that means the woman you exchanged vows with could be deceiving you on a near-daily basis.<\/p>\n
\u201cWomen weigh the pros and cons of honesty versus lying,\u201d says Susan Shapiro Barash, author of Little White Lies, Deep Dark Secrets: The Truth About Why Women Lie. \u201cOften they find that white lies serve them more than the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n
Your wife\u2019s dishonesty may come from a place of compassion, or may just be an attempt to please or placate you.<\/p>\n
But, the truth is, no one wants to share a bed with Pinocchio. So when should your B.S. detector sound?<\/p>\n

Listen for these seven common catchphrases\u2014and prepare to call her bluff.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n 1. \u201cThis dress was on sale.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n It wasn\u2019t. In your wife\u2019s mind, saving money (\u201cIt was half off!\u201d) negates spending it\u2014and therefore reduces the odds that you\u2019ll blow up at her about blowing the budget. \u201cThis is often taught by the mother: Always downplay. Never reveal how much something really cost,\u201d says Barash. And her need to protect her image may overpower her desire for honesty. \u201cWe think a man will judge us for our spending habits, and that he\u2019ll think we\u2019re silly or frivolous,\u201d says DeAnne Lorraine, a Los Angeles-based dating coach. \u201cWe don\u2019t want him to think we\u2019re a liability.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 2. \u201cYou have the biggest penis I\u2019ve ever seen.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n You don\u2019t. This is what psychologists call an \u201caltruistic lie\u201d\u2014an untruthful compliment designed to shield you from embarrassment. \u201cMost women have one ex-boyfriend that was enormous,\u201d says Lorraine. \u201cBut among the rest, there were only miniscule differences. So why not tell this guy he\u2019s the biggest?\u201d Read: Unless you\u2019re packing some serious sausage, you probably aren\u2019t top dog. But you\u2019re so similar to the others that she can convince herself you’ve got a quarter inch more to offer. \u201cIt\u2019s not like it really matters to us, but it matters to men,\u201d says Lorraine. \u201cSo we\u2019ll stroke their egos.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 3. \u201cI\u2019ve only slept with two men.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n More like four. Most women can spout off their past partners\u2019 names as quickly as you can your fantasy-league roster. So, no, a few guys from college don\u2019t just accidentally get lost in the shuffle. \u201cWomen always minimize how many sexual partners they\u2019ve had, mostly because they want to seem pristine,\u201d says Barash. By Lorraine\u2019s estimates, doubling her number will give you a more accurate picture of her past. \u201cWomen will say, \u2018That one didn\u2019t count,\u2019 because it only lasted a few minutes, they were really drunk, or never saw the guy again, even though it really was sex,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 4. \u201cI don\u2019t want anything for our anniversary.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Yeah, and you don\u2019t really want to win the lottery. \u201cWe\u2019re saying what we think our partner wants to hear,\u201d says Barash. \u201cBut then the resentment builds.\u201d Translation: Your wife may scoff at the idea of a gift, but still expects you to surprise her with a dozen roses and the purse she\u2019s been lusting after. \u201cWe don\u2019t want to seem needy or demanding,\u201d says Lorraine. \u201cIt\u2019s silly, but we want our partner to read our minds. We assume he\u2019s intuitive enough to know we do want a gift.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 5. \u201cI\u2019m in no hurry to have kids.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Guess again. Maybe she\u2019s not gunning to get pregnant ASAP, but somewhere in her brain, there\u2019s a clock counting down. \u201cWomen know men don\u2019t like to be rushed\u2014that if we try to push them, they\u2019re just going to be turned off,\u201d says Lorraine. \u201cSo we act like we\u2019re cool, like our biological clocks aren\u2019t ticking. But, really, once we hit a certain age, we’re freaking out inside, worrying our eggs are expiring soon.’ Even if your wife is only 25, she still has a timeline in mind, no matter how \u201cgo with the flow\u201d she seems.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 6. \u201cI\u2019m totally cool with your poker nights.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Not always. Your guys\u2019 nights may give her permission to binge-watch Scandal, but she won\u2019t be so receptive if you hold one every weekend. \u201cIt\u2019s in a woman\u2019s biological nature to want a committed partner, and to want to be around him a lot,\u201d says Lorraine. Problem is, women know men relish their freedom\u2014and that commandeering every night of your week can push you away. \u201cNo woman wants to seem needy,\u201d says Barash. \u201cSo she won\u2019t be totally honest about her feelings toward your commitments, or what she expects from you time-wise.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 7. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t change anything about you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n She totally would.
