Government has directed the Ghana Water Company Limited in Tamale to organize constant water tanker services to serve residents of Yendi Municipality.<\/p>\n

This forms part of immediate steps adopted by government to ease the water crisis which has hit the area.<\/p>\n

Deputy Minister for Water Resources, Works and Housing, Samson Ahi gave the directive during his visit to Yendi Township to assess the situation.<\/p>\n

His timely visit followed a group calling itself the Concerned Yendi Residents call on government to fix the problem.<\/p>\n

The group threatened to demonstrate on June 28, 2015 if government failed to address the problem.
\nSamson Ahi said government had considered the Yendi water crisis as a human catastrophe, hence the rapid response.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are immediate steps to be taken to solve this problem looking into the future and immediately we have asked the Ghana Water Company in Tamale to organize tankers services to support social institutions such as the hospital, schools and institutions that are of national concern.\u201d<\/p>\n

He stated that the population of Yendi overpowered water delivery systems which necessitated the short supply.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe water problem is quite alarming because if you look at the population of Yendi today on daily basis we should be able to produce and distribute about 2.8 million gallons a day but at the moment we are doing around 850,000 gallons a day: that is when all things being equal there is inflows into the Daka river then we are producing and distributing at the peak but when we have a natural situation like this where the rains are not coming then the problem becomes serious.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Deputy Minister for Water Resources, Works and Housing disclosed government\u2019s intention to secure $30 million Dollars from the Indian government to expand the Yendi water delivery system.<\/p>\n

He said the funding will be used to procure pumping machines and generators to boost water supply in the Yendi Municipality.<\/p>\n

He allayed fears that solving the water crisis will require a long term plan.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will complement the effort of dredging the Daka river so that there can be inflows into the system for it to be pumped.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said government considered constructing new systems including drawing water from the Oti River to meet demand.<\/p>\n

The Regent of Dagbon, Kampakuya-Naa Yakubu Andani bemoaned the shortfall in socio-economic activities as a result of the water crisis.<\/p>\n

He therefore supported calls on government to permanently solve the water crisis.<\/p>\n

He also condemned farming along the Daka River and asked the Municipal Assembly to protect it.<\/p>\n

The Yendi Municipal Chief Executive, Issah Zakariah reiterated the assembly\u2019s commitment to improve the living conditions of residents.<\/p>\n

He said the assembly and its development partners have continued to construct mechanized boreholes to solve the perennial water crisis.<\/p>\n

Issah Zakariah called for attitudinal change around water bodies especially the Daka River which is a major source.<\/p>\n
