{"id":127553,"date":"2015-06-23T13:21:47","date_gmt":"2015-06-23T13:21:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=127553"},"modified":"2015-06-23T13:28:58","modified_gmt":"2015-06-23T13:28:58","slug":"water-crisis-hits-yendi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=127553","title":{"rendered":"Water crisis hits Yendi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Residents of the Yendi Municipality in the Northern Region have expressed frustrations after an acute water shortage hit the area.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They have been living without clean water for about two months and this according to them, is affecting socio-economic activities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is also contributing to absenteeism and lateness to school in an area where authorities are making efforts to improve students\u2019 performance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some restaurant operators have already temporarily shutdown.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/YENDI-WATER-CRISIS-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-127562\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/YENDI-WATER-CRISIS-3.jpg\" alt=\"YENDI WATER CRISIS 3\" width=\"642\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/YENDI-WATER-CRISIS-3.jpg 642w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/YENDI-WATER-CRISIS-3-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/YENDI-WATER-CRISIS-3-600x420.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What has aggravated the situation is the drying out of River Daka which serves as a major source of water for residence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Also, lack of rains has compelled residents there to walk long distances in search of water.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tanker service providers in the Yendi Municipality have taken advantage of the situation and excessively charging customers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is against this backdrop a group calling itself the Yendi Concerned Citizens is calling for government\u2019s immediate attention.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At a news conference in Yendi, the group\u2019s President, Mohammed Amin impressed upon government to consider the situation as a human security threat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYendi is being faced with severe water crisis for about two months now, a phenomenon that we hardly experience for some time now: the effects of the current situation is enormous and affects almost all aspects of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cEconomically, the impact of the crisis has affected peoples\u2019 life as people have to buy a dram of water between GHC8.00 to GHC10.00: women, children and students have to walk between 6-10 kilometers in search of water and this has greatly affected productivity and also resulted to lateness to school and absenteeism,\u201d Mohammed Amin bemoaned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/YENDI-WATER-CRISIS-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-127561 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/YENDI-WATER-CRISIS-2.jpg\" alt=\"YENDI WATER CRISIS 2\" width=\"621\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/YENDI-WATER-CRISIS-2.jpg 768w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/YENDI-WATER-CRISIS-2-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 621px) 100vw, 621px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nHe emphasized, \u201cThe Yendi Municipal Assembly must as a matter of urgency organize water tankers to supply water to the people of Yendi at a cheaper price.\u201d<br \/>\nHe also appealed to companies and philanthropists to help alleviate their plight.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe also call on corporate bodies like the Eastern Corridor road construction company, NGOs, CBOs and philanthropists to come to the aid of the people of Yendi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mohammed Amin charged government to fast track the construction of the Gnani water project.<br \/>\nHe further solicited for the drilling of mechanized boreholes to lessen the perennial water crisis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">By: Abdul Karim Naatogmah\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Residents of the Yendi Municipality in the Northern Region have expressed frustrations after an acute water shortage hit the area.
