{"id":11906,"date":"2014-04-09T10:43:11","date_gmt":"2014-04-09T10:43:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=11906"},"modified":"2014-04-09T11:38:45","modified_gmt":"2014-04-09T11:38:45","slug":"ghana-to-ban-rice-tomatoes-textiles-furniture-imports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=11906","title":{"rendered":"Ghana to ban rice, tomatoes, textiles &#038; furniture imports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/rice.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11909\" alt=\"rice\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/rice.jpg\" width=\"257\" height=\"196\" \/><\/a>Government says it is considering banning the importation of rice, tomatoes, textiles and furniture into the country.<\/p>\n<p>This is part of measures to curb the country&#8217;s swelling trade deficit and ease pressure on the cedi.<\/p>\n<p>The cedi has weakened by about 18 percent against the dollar this year alone.<\/p>\n<p>Ghana\u2019s trade deficit from January to October 2013 was US$3.4billion.<\/p>\n<p>Early on President Mahama announced that as part of long term measures toward reducing pressure on the local currency, government will reduce imports of food by over a billion dollars and will also develop the local capacity to produce such items.<\/p>\n<p>Ghana currently spends about US$600m annually to import rice and an additional US$400m annually to import sugar, tomatoes, vegetable cooking oil, frozen fish, poultry and wheat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/tomatoes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11910\" alt=\"tomatoes\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/tomatoes.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/tomatoes.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/tomatoes-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/tomatoes-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, government will protect the various local sectors if they develop capacity to substitute imports.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We want to protect the local industry, local manufactures etc, and we also want to reduce our dependency on foreign goods and add value to local goods.<\/p>\n<p>So whatever we are producing and improving locally we must make sure that we critically reduce the importation of those substitutes and also be more competitive on the international market.<\/p>\n<p>So for now we are looking at rice, textiles timber and furniture later we will look at others\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By:\u00a0 Rabiu Alhassan\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Government says it is considering banning the importation of rice, tomatoes, textiles and furniture into the country.
