{"id":11862,"date":"2014-04-09T08:24:47","date_gmt":"2014-04-09T08:24:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=11862"},"modified":"2014-04-09T08:24:47","modified_gmt":"2014-04-09T08:24:47","slug":"ebola-outbreak-most-challenging-as-guinea-deaths-pass-100","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=11862","title":{"rendered":"Ebola outbreak &#8216;most challenging&#8217; as Guinea deaths pass 100"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_11864\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11864\" style=\"width: 624px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/GUINEA.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11864\" alt=\"There is no known cure or vaccine for Ebola\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/GUINEA.jpg\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/GUINEA.jpg 624w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/GUINEA-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11864\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">There is no known cure or vaccine for Ebola<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"story_continues_1\">The number of people believed to have been killed by the Ebola virus in Guinea has passed 100, the UN World Health Organization says.<\/p>\n<p>It was &#8220;one of the most challenging Ebola outbreaks we have ever dealt with&#8221; and could take another four months to contain, the WHO said.<\/p>\n<p>The virus had now killed 101 people in Guinea and 10 in Liberia, it said.<\/p>\n<p>Ebola is spread by close contact and kills between 25% and 90% of its victims.<\/p>\n<p>Many West African states have porous borders, and people travel frequently between countries.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;High alert&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Southern Guinea is at the epicentre of the outbreak, with the first case reported last month.<\/p>\n<p>The geographical spread of the outbreak is continuing to make it particularly challenging to contain &#8211; past outbreaks have involved much smaller areas.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We fully expect to be engaged in this outbreak for the next two to three to four months before we are comfortable that we are through it,&#8221; Keija Fukuda, WHO&#8217;s assistant director-general, said at a news briefing in Geneva, Reuters news agency reports.<\/p>\n<p>The WHO said 157 suspected cases had been recorded in Guinea, including 20 in the capital, Conakry.<\/p>\n<p>Sixty-seven of the cases have been confirmed as Ebola, it added.<\/p>\n<p>In neighbouring Liberia, 21 cases had been reported, with five confirmed as Ebola, WHO said.<\/p>\n<p>Mali had reported nine suspected cases, but medical tests done so far showed that two of them did not have Ebola, it said.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Mali said it was on high alert because of fears of an outbreak of Ebola and it would tighten border controls.<\/p>\n<p>Saudi Arabia has suspended visas for Muslim pilgrims from Guinea and Liberia, in a sign of the growing unease about the outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first known outbreak in Guinea &#8211; most recent cases have been thousands of miles away in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.<\/p>\n<p>There is no known cure or vaccine for Ebola.<\/p>\n<p>The tropical virus leads to haemorrhagic fever, causing muscle pain, weakness, vomiting, diarrhoea and, in severe cases, organ failure and unstoppable bleeding.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The number of people believed to have been killed by the Ebola virus in Guinea has passed 100, the UN World Health Organization says.
