Northern Regional Secretariat of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned government for the \u2018collapse\u2019 of the Metro Mass Transit (MMT) system.<\/p>\n
[contextly_sidebar id=”Lm5OVoPXNlArwAXi8HnsXyvuqgBQ1oHc”]Government in an attempt to revamp the MMT recently imported some buses for onward distribution to the various regions.<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, the opposition NPP claims there is a deficit because hundreds of the old buses have broken down.<\/p>\n
Management of the MMT across the country has complained about lack of spare parts to repair the buses.
\nIt is against this backdrop, the NPP Northern Regional Secretariat has scolded government over the decline of the MMT services.<\/p>\n
The regional Secretary, Sule Salifu in a news statement copied Citi News said, \u201cThe Metro Mass transport system in the region is grinding to a halt as most of its buses have been grounded because of lack of spare parts.\u201d<\/p>\n
He observed that the situation had adversely affected commuters in the region.<\/p>\n
Sule Salifu insinuated that the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) crowded the MMT workforce with party foot soldiers.<\/p>\n
This, according to him created financial leakages at the MMT in the region.<\/p>\n
He tasked government to overhaul the MMT to serve the purpose of its establishment.<\/p>\n
As a pro-poor policy, the erstwhile Kufuor led NPP administration introduced the system to provide affordable and reliable transportation services to all.
\nThe vulnerable group including the aged and school children were exempted from paying fares.<\/p>\n
In the Northern Region, it served as a major source of transportation from the regional capital, Tamale to Yendi, Gushiegu, Salaga, Damongo, Bunkprugu\/Yunyoo, Savelugu and Kpandai.<\/p>\n
