Over the past 24 hours, I have received pre-mothers\u2019 day wishes from many people. Some have been straight to the point, \u201cHappy Mother’s day\u201d. Others have been long and winding, like this one I received at midnight from someone I have never met.<\/p>\n
His text read; \u201cHappy mothers\u2019 day my dear and best friend. You have brought refreshing feelings to my soul ever since I met you\u2026you are a good friend and great mother in making\u2026may God bless you and grant all your heart desires\u2026may you live long in good health, may all be well with you\u2026I love you\u201d.<\/p>\n
Considering the fact that I have never met this guy, I don’t know how I touched his life this much. It is creepy.<\/p>\n
Anyway, I am not a mum. I have had disquieting thoughts on whether I intend to be one someday. But in a world when you don\u2019t have to have your own biological kids to be a mum; when even your neighbour\u2019s 18 year old son calls you a mum, I don\u2019t think I can run away from mum duties even if I wanted to.<\/p>\n
So if I were a mum, this is what I would do.<\/p>\n
I would raise my kids to appreciate me all day and show it in what they do.<\/p>\n
I would let them understand that I welcome gifts and surprises all day throughout the year.<\/p>\n
I would tell them it is okay to show mum to the world anytime and speak of how proud you are to have her any day.<\/p>\n
I would also teach them to craft their own love notes to me and avoid \u201cplagiarizing\u201d others\u2019 notes.<\/p>\n
I will not make them feel pressured to treat me the way others will treat their mum on mothers\u2019 day.
\nI will tell them, it is important to act genuine and be the only one on the path than follow what everyone else is doing.<\/p>\n
But above all, I would teach them that it is important to show mum you love her, than tell her on platforms that she doesn\u2019t subscribe to and will never see.<\/p>\n
So on the first Sunday in every May, I would turn off my phone and avoid all calls and text messages that would come wishing me a happy day.<\/p>\n
I would spend the day same as I do each day, because every day would have been a Happy Mothers\u2019 Day for me.<\/p>\n
