The U.K. will hold one of its most unpredictable\u00a0elections in decades Thursday, and with no clear winner \u00a0likely, the stage is set for days of political horse-trading to determine the country\u2019s next leader.<\/p>\n
The U.K. has traditionally seen government pass between \u00a0the two main parties\u2014the Conservatives, currently led \u00a0by Prime Minister David Cameron, and the Labour Party, \u00a0led by Ed Miliband.<\/p>\n
But the latest polls suggest that \u00a0neither will win a majority of seats in Parliament\u2014and \u00a0may need more than one other party to cobble one \u00a0together.<\/p>\n
A debate about which party would have the most \u00a0legitimate claim to govern has begun even before polling booths opened.<\/p>\n
The Conservatives are forecast to win the most seats, \u00a0and are likely to claim that gives them a mandate to \u00a0continue to lead the U.K. for the next five years.<\/p>\n
But Mr. Miliband could be in a position to argue that \u00a0he has a bigger mandate, by drawing on the support of \u00a0like-minded parties. Such a scenario would be legal and \u00a0has happened before in the U.K.<\/p>\n
