{"id":112059,"date":"2015-04-28T10:07:25","date_gmt":"2015-04-28T10:07:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=112059"},"modified":"2015-04-28T10:07:25","modified_gmt":"2015-04-28T10:07:25","slug":"cabinet-approves-ratification-of-arms-trade-treaty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=112059","title":{"rendered":"Cabinet approves ratification of arms trade treaty\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Cabinet has approved a memorandum for the ratification of the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) which seeks to ensure standardization in the arms trade and transfer to foster peace and security.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The ATT is a multilateral treaty that regulates the international trade in conventional weapons.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;rI0I75CfyNb35I0XWmCpXvwWwB5sxzq3&#8243;]The landmark ATT, regulating the international trade in conventional arms &#8211; from small arms to battle tanks, combat aircraft and warships &#8211; entered into force on December 24, 2014.<\/p>\n<p>A Cabinet paper addressed to the Ministers of the Interior; and Foreign\u00a0Affairs and Regional Integration said the two Ministers have been directed to take immediate action for parliamentary approval.<\/p>\n<p>So far, 130 States have signed the treaty while 67 States have ratified.<\/p>\n<p>The ATT is an attempt to regulate the international trade of conventional weapons for the purpose of contributing to international and regional peace, reducing human suffering, and promoting co-operation, transparency and responsible action by and among states.<\/p>\n<p>President of West Africa Action Network on Small Arms and Light Weapons (WAANSA), Baffour Amoa said Ghana\u2019s ratification is paramount as \u201cwe are considered as a major voice in the international community\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He said through the efforts of WAANSA eight West African countries have achieved parliamentary approval of the treaty and six countries have deposited their instrument of ratification.<\/p>\n<p>He said with the coming into force of the ATT, weapons transfer could now be regulated with strict accountability and \u201cwe hope as a result of the treaty the world may see reduction in unnecessary armed conflict.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source: GNA<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cabinet has approved a memorandum for the ratification of the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) which seeks to ensure standardization in the arms trade and transfer to foster peace and security.
