Malawian activists have called on citizens to boycott South African-owned shops following the xenophobic attacks in South Africa.<\/p>\n
[contextly_sidebar id=”HPrKHSSY6AJAtftkJQ3x7YXKcOL7Rhft”]The shops have since remained closed and leading South African chain stores are under heavy Police protection due to fears of a possible reprisal attack.<\/p>\n
The boycott they say is to send a \u201csymbolic message\u201d to South Africans<\/p>\n
The xenophobic attacks which has been ongoing for about three weeks now has so far claimed about 10 lives and has rendered about 5,000 persons homeless.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of Malawians have been evacuated from South Africa.<\/p>\n
In Ghana however, the Foreign Affairs Ministry has indicated that Ghanaian nationals living in South Africa are unwilling to return home.<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n Nonetheless, evacuation plans<\/strong><\/span><\/a> are said to be in place for persons who are willing to return.<\/p>\n There were earlier reports that some Ghanaians had been killed in the attacks but the South African High Commissioner to Ghana, Lulama Xingwana\u00a0denied the media reports.<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n Meanwhile, in Ghana, there is heavy Police presence<\/strong><\/span><\/a> on the premises of the South African High Commission for fear of reprisal attacks<\/p>\n By: Efua Idan Osam\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana
