{"id":109622,"date":"2015-04-19T14:39:44","date_gmt":"2015-04-19T14:39:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=109622"},"modified":"2015-04-19T14:39:44","modified_gmt":"2015-04-19T14:39:44","slug":"un-extends-ghanas-maritime-boundary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=109622","title":{"rendered":"UN extends Ghana\u2019s maritime boundary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The United Nation has given Ghana the approval to extend her continental shelve beyond 200 nautical miles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After Ghana discovered oil in commercial quantities in 2007, the government declared its intension to seek an extension to the country\u2019s continental shelf in order to extend its exclusive economic zone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In April 2009, the Continental Shelf Delineating Committee submitted its working document to the minister for Lands and Natural Resources (Mines), and later to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) that same year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;iba4JDW5bfHMdvuR2YmmimPJxf988fBI&#8221;]The continental shelve of Ghana comprises of the sea bed and sub soil of the submarine areas that extends beyond it territorial waters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On March 10, last year the country\u2019s team concluded its final inputs to the United Nations\u2019 Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) regarding a request for the extension of the continental shelf.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This followed consensus reached between Ghana, the sub-commission and the commission on a number of issues on the Foot of the Slope (FOS) and outer limits points.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2014\/09\/23\/ghana-sues-cote-divoire-over-maritime-boundary\/#sthash.ba6L5Zs3.dpbs\" target=\"_blank\">Ghana is battling the Ivory Coast<\/a><\/span><\/strong> at the International Court of Arbitration in The Hague after more than a decade over marine time boundary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The extension means Ghana can now explore more natural resources for economic development.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Minister of Lands and Natural resources, Nii Osa Mills, announcing this at a media briefing in Accra on Tuesday\u00a0said, \u201cGhana has received approval to extend it continental shelve from the United Nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said: \u201cThis will enhance Ghana&#8217;s sea bed natural resources beyond its present state&#8230;
