{"id":10941,"date":"2014-04-04T10:33:57","date_gmt":"2014-04-04T10:33:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=10941"},"modified":"2014-04-04T10:33:57","modified_gmt":"2014-04-04T10:33:57","slug":"ec-to-increase-polling-stations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=10941","title":{"rendered":"EC to increase polling stations"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/voting-in-Ghana_28.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5711\" alt=\"voting-in-Ghana_28\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/voting-in-Ghana_28.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"303\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/voting-in-Ghana_28.jpg 480w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/voting-in-Ghana_28-300x189.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a>The Electoral Commission (EC) is to increase the number of\u00a0 polling stations across the country from 26,000 to 35,000.<\/p>\n<p>This is to reduce the voter population\u00a0 at some\u00a0 polling stations, as well as\u00a0 reduce the pressure on the Biometric Verification Device (BVD), to enable it function efficiently without any hitch.<\/p>\n<p>The Chairperson of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and a member of the EC , Mrs Georgina Opoku-Amankwah\u00a0announced this at a consultative forum on the Public Elections Regulation CI 75 in Koforidua.<\/p>\n<p>She explained that\u00a0 it was a move to address the various challenges encountered with the verification process during the 2012\u00a0 elections.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0According to her, the CI 75 is the same regulation to be used for the upcoming district assembly elections and therefore the need to consult the public to collectively \u00a0review some of the provisions of the regulations.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Mr John Aidoo, Director in-charge of Finance and Administration of the EC, who spoke on the challenges encountered in the 2012 elections,\u00a0 mentioned the difficulty in capturing the fingerprints of eligible voters, the number of ballot papers exceeding that\u00a0 recorded by the BVD, as some of the challenges that confronted the EC.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>He said, the over-voting issue\u00a0 and the\u00a0 frequent breakdown of the verification devices\u00a0 marred the smooth running of the elections.<\/div>\n<p>Mr Aidoo observed that\u00a0 most of the election officers did not heed to the advice of changing the BVD batteries after every four hours, and said that resulted in the breakdown of most of the machines,\u00a0 thus causing delay in the balloting process.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Aiddo explained that the batteries had been designed to work continuously\u00a0 for four hours, and failure to change them result in the break down of machines, which\u00a0 take\u00a0 longer periods to start working again after the batteries had been changed .<\/p>\n<p>He said to ensure smooth operation , the EC would put stringent measures in place to ensure strict adherence to the handling of the machines, and added that despite the BVD challenges, its advantages far outweigh the challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Dogbey Adukpo Selormey, Eastern Regional Director of Elections, said a number of votes exceeding that recorded by the BVD and counting mistakes similar to that of the general elections are some of the anticipated challenges to be encountered in the district level elections.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source: GNA<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Electoral Commission (EC) is to increase the number of\u00a0 polling stations across the country from 26,000 to 35,000.
