{"id":106844,"date":"2015-04-09T13:59:29","date_gmt":"2015-04-09T13:59:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=106844"},"modified":"2015-04-09T13:59:29","modified_gmt":"2015-04-09T13:59:29","slug":"akosua-adoma-owusu-to-debut-civil-rights-focused-short-film","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=106844","title":{"rendered":"Akosua Adoma Owusu to debut civil rights-focused short film"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Having tackled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-t6bYip32W8\">African folklore<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/store.cinemaguild.com\/nontheatrical\/product\/2358.html\">European colonialism<\/a> in her previous projects, award-winning filmmaker Akosua Adoma Owusu has turned her attention to the American Civil Rights movement of the 1950s.<\/p>\n<p>Her current project, \u201cBus Nut,\u201d produced by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/akosuadoma\">Obibini Pictures<\/a> takes a fresh look at a well-known narrative \u2013 the 1955 Bus Boycott in Montgomery, Alabama. The boycott was sparked by the simple, but brave, action taken by Rosa Parks, who famously refused to give her seat on a public bus to a white passenger. Parks was subsequently arrested for defying Alabama\u2019s laws regarding segregation. She quickly became a symbol of the civil rights movement, and the bus boycott remained in effect for over 1 year \u2013 until the Supreme Court determined that Alabama\u2019s segregation laws were unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p>Owusu\u2019s short film juxtaposes recreated images and the words of Rosa Parks, against an educational video about public school bus safety. Actress <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anafricancity.tv\/\">MaameYaa Boafo<\/a> of the hit web series \u2018An African City\u2019, who portrays the \u2018Bus Nut\u2019 in the short film, called the effect \u201cpowerful\u201d and \u201cjarring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was powerful,\u201d she said, \u201cto portray these two individuals \u2013 with words from the trial of why an innocent woman had no reason to leave a bus, and footage of a little girl who dreams of always being in one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Owusu and TedxAccra speaker\/actress Boafo are excited to work together on this film.
