{"id":106739,"date":"2015-04-09T10:29:26","date_gmt":"2015-04-09T10:29:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=106739"},"modified":"2015-04-09T10:37:22","modified_gmt":"2015-04-09T10:37:22","slug":"im-disappointed-ghanaians-jubilated-over-failed-afcon-bid-ayariga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=106739","title":{"rendered":"I&#8217;m disappointed Ghanaians jubilated over failed AFCON bid &#8211; Ayariga"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Immediate past Sports Minister, Mahama Ayariga has said he is greatly worried that some citizens are trying to run down the country by jubilating over Ghana\u2019s failure to secure the hosting right for the 2017 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am concerned about people trying to run down their country and creating an impression that their country is not good,\u201d he lamented on the <strong>Citi Breakfast Show<\/strong> on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/joojo.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-106551\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/joojo.png\" alt=\"joojo\" width=\"489\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/joojo.png 489w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/joojo-300x126.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 489px) 100vw, 489px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;n7gRDuhgw530U9EtSxGtYV4mSBP9TGXQ&#8221;]He argued that the world has confidence in Ghana and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) acknowledged that the nation had the capacity to host the sporting event.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Ayariga observed that Ghana is \u201cmaking progress and people must accept that that is what is happening and I don\u2019t see how you can say that because you haven\u2019t addressed some financial issues,\u201d there is no need to host the 2017 AFCON.<\/p>\n<p>Ghana on Wednesday <a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/04\/08\/ghana-loses-out-on-hosting-afcon-2017-to-gabon\/#sthash.oYmpPPLF.dpbs\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>lost the bid to host the 2017 AFCON<\/strong><\/span><\/a>; a situation <a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/04\/08\/ghanaians-jubilate-over-failed-2017-afcon-bid\/#sthash.H20CKDql.dpbs\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>Ghanaians wholeheartedly accepted and jubilated<\/strong><\/span><\/a> over.<\/p>\n<p>After the Sports Ministry announced last year that it will<a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2014\/08\/26\/ghana-to-launch-bid-for-afcon-2017-2\/#sthash.JmFU9cQE.dpbs\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong> put in a bid to host<\/strong> <\/span><\/a>the sporting event in 2017, it caused major public uproar as most Ghanaians kicked against the idea.<\/p>\n<p>They cited the current economic crisis which has forced the government to seek financial assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), coupled with the deepening energy crisis which has adversely affected many sectors of the economy.<\/p>\n<p>Some also kicked against Ghana\u2019s bid because according to them, the 2008 AFCON which was hosted in the country was what led to the dubious payment of the GHC 51 million judgment debt to businessman Alfred Woyome.<\/p>\n<p>However, Ayariga stated that the argument that Ghana is currently experiencing socio-economic challenges therefore it would have been unwise to host the tournament does not hold.<\/p>\n<p>He was of the view that if Ghana was going to undertake any major infrastructural developments to enable the country host the tournament, then \u201cthis argument might hold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the nation already has its priorities right in terms of developing infrastructure such as airports, roads, health infrastructure, telecommunication, hotels\u2026\u201dand we made all these presentations to CAF and they agreed\u2026in terms of capacity as a country; we have it and we can do it. I believe that we could have done a very good job if given the opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ghana&#8217;s stadia don&#8217;t need major renovations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The former Sports Minister further debunked assertions that all the stadia which were constructed prior to the 2008 AFCON are in bad shape and large sums of money would have been needed to undertake extensive renovation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t see any serious renovation in any of the stadia.
