Landowners at the Airport South area in the La Dade Kotopon Municipality are demanding compensation from the military for destroying their properties.<\/p>\n

A group of armed military men on Tuesday demolished houses and walls<\/strong><\/span><\/a> at the Airport South claiming the properties were posing serious threat to the safety of some sensitive military installations.<\/p>\n

The Ghana Armed Forces who took responsibility for undertaking the exercise further warned residents \u201cto stay off military lands.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the residents during a press briefing on Thursday insisted that the lands does not belong to the military.<\/p>\n

According to the spokesperson for the Accra Airport South residence association, Dr. Samuel Ohene, \u201cThese lands in question are not public lands but private lands and the military cannot lay claims to them\u201d and that \u201cThe claim that the land in question belongs to the military is simply false.\u201d<\/p>\n

[contextly_sidebar id=”3nxFVt8ARduHF7V33ifOQ2iERtlXj9nD”]He insisted that the military have not also made any compensation payments to them \u201cin conformity to the constitution and the relevant laws of the country,\u201d hence cannot claim the land belongs to them.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe call on the military to respect the laws of the country and refrain from acts of trespass, intimidation and wanton destruction of property and allow peace-loving citizens to enjoy their constitutional rights to enjoy their properties.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe call on the Ghana armed forces and the government of Ghana to take steps to pay the full value of the properties which the military has admitted to destroy in this area. We\u2019re also calling on the armed forces council, the minister of defense and president as the commander in chief to takes to restrain the military from continuing their unlawful act\u2026and ensure that the military respects the laws and constitution of the Republic.\u201d<\/p>\n
