{"id":103620,"date":"2015-03-30T06:34:22","date_gmt":"2015-03-30T06:34:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=103620"},"modified":"2015-03-30T06:34:41","modified_gmt":"2015-03-30T06:34:41","slug":"nigerian-elections-a-success-say-observers-despite-hitches","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=103620","title":{"rendered":"Nigerian elections a success, say observers despite hitches"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">The Nigerian general elections have been hailed by international observers in spite of reports of violence and the technical hitches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Voting in the elections was <a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/03\/29\/nigeria-elections-enters-day-two\/#sthash.seZj5jN4.dpbs\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>extended into a second day<\/strong><\/span><\/a> following delays in the verification of voters caused by problems with the card readers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;nVy2wS99rIaPIsZFFROMjkyplalnUjoX&#8221;]President Goodluck Jonathan had to <a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/03\/28\/nigeria-president-jonathans-verification-delayed-by-technical-problems\/#sthash.WEGL4CfR.jliGTkQ6.dpbs\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>wait for almost 5o minutes<\/strong><\/span><\/a> until his identity was verified.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Opposition supporters in River State have also protested what they call irregularities in the voting process and the Nigerian Electoral Commission office in the region was set ablaze.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">There have also been reports of sporadic violence across the country, however, President Jonathan stated the violence was not related to the elections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">&#8220;The war against terrorists is going on, voting or no voting,&#8221; he said. &#8220;There was a conflict, kind of a crossfire, between soldiers and terrorists that had nothing to do with the elections.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">And the international observers, including the United Nations (UN) Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and\u00a0the head of the delegation\u00a0from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), John Kufuor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">The UN Secretary general described the process as\u00a0&#8220;largely peaceful and orderly&#8221; in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>He acknowledged the &#8220;determination and resilience&#8221; of Nigerian voters to come out and take part in the process despite the threat posed by Militant Islamist group Boko Haram\u00a0and\u00a0urged voters to maintain a &#8220;peaceful atmosphere and to exercise patience.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On his part, the former Ghanaian president John Kufuor described the process as&#8221;quite peaceful, orderly and credible&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts have said the election, being contested between Jonathan and General Mahamudu Buhari is the closest since Nigeria returned to democratic rule.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By: Edwin Kwakofi\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigerian general elections have been hailed by international observers in spite of reports of violence and the technical hitches.
